Abstract

The 1985 Catalog of Mapped Genes (Human Gene Mapping 8; 33) has been used to pick out the known, immunologically important genes; these are then discussed in the following order: genes controlling organs, tissues and cells of the immune apparatus, genes determining 'self' structures, genes determining the structures of immunological specificity, genes determining substances with immunoregulatory and effector properties. The symbols for the genes and the biological functions of their products are explained. The genetics of the ABO blood groups, of the HLA-system and of antibody formation are given in rather more detail.

Intraplatelet von Willebrand factor and ABO blood group.

Levels of plasma Von Willebrand Factor (vWF) are known to be influenced by ABO Blood Group but such an influence on platelet vWF is not known. Forty-three healthy donors had blood drawn for measurement of plasma and platelet vWF, both antigenic (vWF:Ag) and functional (RCo). Twenty-six were Group O and seventeen were Group A. Groups did not differ in age, platelet count, hemoglobin, white cell counts, platelet rich plasma counts nor length of in vitro storage of samples prior to assay. Plasma levels of vWF:Ag and RCo was lower in Group O as expected. Platelet RCo was lower in Group O and such a trend was present for vWF:Ag. This influence of ABO Groups on platelet vWF was modest compared to that on plasma vWF.

Animal histo-blood group ABO genes.

Sequences homologous to the human histo-blood group ABO genes are present in the genomic DNA of various mammals. We have PCR-amplified, subcloned, and sequenced a portion of these genes from several species of primates and found high conservation of the nucleotide as well as the deduced amino acid sequences during evolution.
