Abstract

Particular safety measures are suggested that a victim alone at home can practice self-applied first aid without provoking further injury. Mild wound injuries necessitate medical advice in order to determine the necessity of a tetanus shot. A physician should also inspect if the bandaging and medication was properly applied. If only one rescurer is available, there are general criteria which indicate that first aid be given in certain cases while other emergency situations necessitate urgent care. Various examples of emergency situations are illustrated which differentiate between life-threatening situation and less critical emergencies. An immediate evaluation of the severity of the victim's condition with corresponding type of treatment can save the victim's life. Drugs and medications should always be kept in a fixed place which is easily accessible to family members and eventually to medical personnel. We include a list of all necessary first aid materials, and their possible substitution in case they are not available. Fundamental regulations regarding gas leak-related accidents are listed. We advise not ringing the doorbell, electric lights should not be used, the windows and doors should be opened wide and the victim should be dragged away as far as possible. General indications are given in order to slow or decrease external bleeding.

[Incidence of hip fractures in Cantabria].

BACKGROUND: Fracture of the hip constitutes a serious social/health care problem with very little information concerning incidence in Spain being available. METHODS: The diagnosis of hospital admissions and the diagnosis of release from the traumatology units of health care centers for acute patients in Cantabria were reviewed. The study was carried out from the 1st of January to the 31st of December 1988 and only included patients over 49 years of age. Patients who did not habitually reside in the region were excluded. The following data were collected in each case: age, sex, place of residence (urban or rural), time of the year, side fractured, type of injury, previous contralateral fracture and perioperative mortality. RESULTS: The rate of fracture referred to the population of more than 49 years of age was 277/100,000 in the case of females and 100/100,000 for males. The mean age of women was 80.4 +/- 8.5 years and of men was 76.9 +/- 10.9 years (p > 0.02), respectively. No differences were observed with regard to the place of residence or the time of year. The fracture was left sided in 61% of the females and 58% of the males. The injury was almost always due to a fall. Six percent of the patients had a previous contralateral fracture. Perioperative mortality was 6%. CONCLUSIONS: The incidence of hip fracture in Cantabria is similar to that of other regions in Spain and lower to that of parts of central and northern Europe and the United States.

Air cushion mower foot injuries.

AIMS: This study was undertaken to identify significant physical, social and psychological problems resulting from injuries caused to the feet by air cushion mowers. METHODS: Thirty-four patients seen with air cushion mower injuries were reviewed, either by personal assessment, or by questionnaire. RESULTS: A large number of patients had significant symptoms relating to their soft tissue or bone injuries, the majority experiencing some pain, and those who had amputations difficulty in some aspects of walking. CONCLUSIONS: Better education of the dangers of the misuse of these mowers may reduce the incidence of significant forefoot injuries.

Fungal keratitis from nylon line lawn trimmers.

Ocular trauma from nylon line lawn trimmers is becoming more prevalent. Previous case reports have described penetrating trauma caused by these tools. We managed three cases of fungal keratitis caused by injuries from nylon line trimmers. Fungal keratitis should be strongly considered as the cause of any corneal ulcer related to trauma from a nylon line lawn trimmer.
