Current studies on oxidant stress in dialysis.

Breath ethane measurements in hemodialysis indicate that a portion of these patients suffer increased oxidant stress, consistent with findings using other methods for oxidant stress determination. Loosely-bound iron definitely appears in the bloodstream when substantial doses of IV iron are administered, since transferrin is fully saturated, but our investigations generally do not show short-term oxidant stress from this treatment. If small doses of IV iron are utilized, transferrin saturation can be avoided, and risk is minimized. The vitamin C status of hemodialysis patients is usually lower than the general population, and the impact of this deficiency must be assessed in controlled investigations. Various interventions, including the vitamin E-bonded dialyzer and dietary antioxidant supplements, may ameliorate a portion of the oxidant stress in hemodialysis patients.

[Particular aspects of rhinitis and rhino-conjunctivitis].

The authors report their experience of 28 years of practice in the opthalmology service of the CHRU at Rennes. The describe certain particular aspects of rhinitis and rhino-conjuctivitis where the danger resides in an extensive risk to the uvula or the bronchi. They insist on the importance of understanding polyvalents in internal medicine (rôle of the seat of gingivodentary "ideas", value of research into indicative markers of protection A2 and B40 in the HLA system. In the region of nutrition, they emphasize the importance of the rôle of zinc, of vitamin C and of magnesium. They base their hopes on study of the local markers of sensitivity, in order to assess the elements of preventative action for an eventual ocular and bronchial extension.

[The vitamins and minerals provision of children living in different ecological-biogeochemical zones in Chuvashia].

The results of investigation about providing 96 children at the age of 11-12 with vitamins in different ecological-biogeochemical zones of Chuvashia are presented in this article. The actual nutrition of children was estimated, by questionnaire-weight Pokrovsky's method and the level of excretion of vitamins B1, B2 and ascorbic acid with urine was studied by fluorescent method. The deficiency of riboflavin (66% in girls and 97% in boys) and ascorbic acid deficiency (30% in children) was revealed in the daily ration, the quantity of thiamin was sufficient. The providing the organism of children with investigated vitamins is low in Chuvashia. There is the link between ecological-biogeochemical characteristics of Chuvashia and providing with vitamins B1, B2 and C, their quantity in food being the same.
