Laser design considerations.

Abstract

Characteristics of laser design are presented. The technical aspects of the carbon dioxide laser are discussed and contrasted with those of the argon, superpulse carbon dioxide, and Nd-YAG lasers. This article describes typical devices currently employed in podiatric surgery.

Surface properties of unsaturated non-oxidized and oxidized free fatty acids spread as monomolecular films at an argon/water interface.

The interfacial properties of monomolecular films of stearic acid (SA) oleic acid (OA), linoleic acid (LA), ricinoleic acid (RA), 13(S)-hydroperoxyoctadeca-9Z,11E-dienoic acid (13-HPODE) and 13(S)-hydroxyoctadeca-9Z,11E-dienoic acid (13-HODE) were studied by recording the changes occurring in response to monomolecular film compression in their surface pressure and surface potential at the argon/water interface. The oxidized free fatty acids are more expanded than the parent non-oxidized free fatty acids, reflecting a higher hydrophilic-lipophilic balance. The lift-off values of the molecular area of 13-HODE, 13-HPODE and RA were 68, 74 and 106 A2 molecule(-1), respectively, as compared to 47 and 40 A2 molecule(-1) in the case of LA and OA, respectively. Variations in the molecular orientation of free fatty acids can result in large changes in the dipole moment which are not accompanied by appreciable changes in the surface pressure. In the case of the oxidized free fatty acids, the spontaneous desorption into the aqueous phase was found to increase at increasing surface pressures. The desorption rates of OA and LA increased dramatically in the presence of beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD); whereas the presence of beta-CD only slightly increased the desorption rates of the oxidized free fatty acids.

UV-laser photoisomerization of fumaryl chloride: the first identification of maleoyl chloride: matrix isolation infrared and ab initio studies.

Fourier transform infrared spectra of fumaryl chloride 1 isolated in an argon matrix at 10 K have been analyzed. The comparison between the ab initio HF/6-31G calculated infrared spectra with the experimental ones reveals the existence of three planar conformers, the cis cis 1a, the cis trans 1b and the trans trans 1c. Laser UV irradiation of 1 at lambda = 340 nm yields maleoyl chloride 2 by a carbon carbon double bond photoisomerization process. The first identification of this compound was performed by comparison of the experimental infrared spectra with the calculated ones at the MP2/6-1G** level. AM1 semiempirical and ab initio calculations were used to calculate the structure and the relative stability of the three non planar maleoyl chloride conformers.

Considerations during clinical operation of two commercially available cryomachines.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Advances in the technology of cryomachines in the last 10 years have led to the development of both liquid nitrogen and argon-based Joule-Thompson cryomachines. Theoretical and practical evaluation of the CMS Accuprobe and the ENDOcare CRYOcare was performed as respective examples of these technologies. METHODS: Thermal gradients were calculated about both probes for the best case scenario of probe surface temperature equaling that of the cryogen used. Also, experimental evaluation in gelatin phantoms was performed with five probe arrays. RESULTS: Theoretically, a liquid nitrogen-cooled probe provides only a slight advantage over one cooled with liquid argon. However, the experimental performance evaluation demonstrated that the CRYOcare system creates an iceball faster with steeper internal temperature gradients than the Accuprobe. Further, temperature outputs from the Accuprobe were shown to be in error, likely due to the position of the thermocouple within the probe. CONCLUSIONS: Cryomachine performance is determined more by technological innovations than by cryogen temperature. Thermocouple monitoring is urged for users of the Accuprobe.
