Simple summary calculations.

Abstract

Methods of measuring the general magnitude or central tendency of sets of data are described, including the mean, median and mode. Similarly, methods of determining the degree of dispersion of the observations about the mean, including range, variance, and standard deviation are presented, together with worked practical examples of their use and importance. The use of algebraic notation in statistics is described.

Caries prediction--state of the art.

This paper considers the question of whether, by using the currently available measures for assessing caries risk, one can identify with sufficient accuracy the high caries-risk susceptible individuals who need individual protection to avoid having an unacceptably high number of new cavities. In addition, the outline of a typical caries prediction study is presented with an example, Finally, the accuracy of an actual caries prediction is compared with the accuracy of predicting the onset of acute myocardial infarction in order to point out the fact that the risk of any disease is difficult to assess accurately.

[Oral disease epidemiologic illness indices and oral health measures--traditional concepts are supplemented by new socio-dental indicators].

The article describes various of the commonly used measures for oral health and disease. Their disadvantages and shortcomings are discussed, and alternative approaches are presented. It is argued that the "classical" clinical indices reflect only parts of a holistic understanding of oral health. They should be supplemented by psycho-social measures, so-called socio-dental indicators, which can be applied in epidemiological surveys as well as in the evaluation of preventive programmes.

Fluoridated salt in France.

Since November 28, 1985, fluoridated salt at a concentration of 250 mg KF per Kg has been authorized in food in France. It was introduced in the market at the end of 1986 and represented, in 1993, more than 60% of the market of salt. The effect of this Public Health measure will be shown. The efficiency is evaluated in epidemiological studies concerning DMF in the whole of France and in terms of safety by measurement of urinary excretion of fluoride in children who consume potassium fluoride in the salt and fluoride tablets. Last, the prevention policy in France will be described, including the use of fluoridated salt.
