[Structural characterization of rare-earth stearate and its thermal stability mechanism for PVC].

Structural characterization of rare-earth stearate was conducted by FTIR and XRD. The results show that the bonds between the stearate and rare-earth metal ions in rare-earth stearate are main ionic character and have the stratified crystalline structure with the crystal layer formed from a plane layer of rare-earth ions combined with two layers of fully extended zigzag chains of stearic acid radicals arranged parallell to each other on its both sides, and the rare-earth ions axes are inclined to the crystal layer planes in it. Congo red test showed that the stabilizing time increased when the stabilizers' concentration increased. The order of stability of this four rare-earth stearates is Last>Ndst>Yst>Dyst. Furthermore, the thermal stability mechanism of rare earth stearate for PVC has been presumed by FTIR. The results indicate that Last and Ndst can bate the chain reaction and exchange the labile functional groups in the backbone chains for other more stable substituents derived from the stabilizer and change the framework, while Yst and Dyst's effect is not clear.

[Species dynamic change of added Rare Earth element in soil].

After Rare Earth elements (REEs) was applied into soil, content of exchangeable species decreased obviously with time lapsing. The fastest decrease of content of exchangeable species occurred at wheat tillering stage. A part of the lost content of exchangeable species was absorbed by wheat, and the other part of that was absorbed by soil. The surface activity of iron/manganese oxide was influenced obviously by the secretion function of root, content of iron/manganese oxide binding species rapidly increased before wheat jointing stage, but it decreased quickly after wheat jointing stage. At all time, content of carbonate binding species decreased with time lapsing, and content of residual species and content of organic binding species didn't change.

Use of highly energetic (116 keV) synchrotron radiation for X-ray fluorescence analysis of trace rare-earth and heavy elements.

This study has revealed the advantages of the use of 116 keV X-rays as an excitation source of X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyses. This technique is suitable for nondestructive multielemental analyses of heavy elements such as rare-earth elements. The lowest MDL value evaluated for the bulk analysis of a JG-1 standard reference sample (granite rock) was 0.1 ppm for W for a 500 s measurement. The spectrum of standard glass samples of SRM612 demonstrated clearly resolved K-line peaks of more than 30 elements, including all the existing rare-earth elements, at 50 ppm levels. The calibration curve for the determination of a rare-earth element shows a linear relation between the XRF intensity and concentrations from 10 to 0.03 ng. This powerful technique should be useful for nondestructive analyses of rare-earth and heavy elements in geological, geochemical and archaeological samples as well as industrial materials.
