Dr. Duncan Sinclair, the former dean of medicine who heads the commission charged with restructuring Ontario's health care system, said something dramatic was needed to revamp the system. He wasn't kidding. His commission recently called for the closure of 3 hospitals in Ottawa and 10 more in Toronto. In a wideranging interview with Charlotte Gray he talks about the commission's goals and their potential impact on physicians.
Rural hospitals are confronted with multiple challenges to survive in the competitive health care environment of today's world. Declining population, corporate mergers and downsizing, transportation, cost of technology, and health manpower shortages are only a few of the issues rural hospitals must be prepared to address in order to survive. Federal- and state-administered programs are available that can contribute to the survival of the rural hospital. The nurse executive has a key role in contributing to the planning, development, and implementation of survival strategies.
This work studies the problems provoked by the closing of a surgical floor of a hospital during the summer months and attempts to evaluate the effects not only in terms of costs but also how it impacts the hospital staff. This article, originally presented as an investigative study, won third prize in the 10th National Nursing Contest, "Ciudad de Sevilla".
