Changing dietary patterns.

Abstract

Previously traditional dietary patterns in Japan are no longer typical. The current changing conditions provide an opportunity to examine more closely some important health conditions associated with the changed lifestyle and concentrations of dietary total fat and saturated fatty acid, and the ratio of n-3 to n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids in the diet.

The case for improving vitamin D status.

Evidence from both physiological experiments and randomized trials demonstrates that elevating vitamin D status above levels prevailing in the North American and European adult populations improves calcium absorption and reduces fall risk and osteoporotic fractures. Additionally observational data suggest that raising vitamin D status protects against various cancers and autoimmune disorders as well. Hence a strong case can be made for immediate improvement in vitamin D status of the general population.
