Pacemaker technology: an overview.

Abstract

Cardiac pacing has evolved considerably over the past 30 years. Early pacemakers were nonprogrammable asynchronous devices which prevented asystole, syncope, and death. The current generation of implantable devices is much more sophisticated. With multiprogrammable features, these devices are intended not only to save life but also to improve the quality of life. This chapter reviews the pacemaker mode-code, indications, electronic circuitry, power sources, and programmable/telemetry features of current devices.

Equipment Design

A new oral surgery teaching model.

An anatomical model for teaching the practical aspects of routine oral surgery in a clinical or laboratory environment, is described. Replaceable sections allow the model to be rapidly re-used so that successive students may practise procedures such as incisions, flap reflection, bone removal, tooth removal, apicectomy and suturing. Keeping the cost per procedure to a minimum was considered to be of fundamental importance and this has been achieved through the use of 'factory produced' replacement parts.
