Abstract

Cough, although the most common respiratory symptom, is poorly understood by doctors. It is still widely believed that all cough occurs as part of mucociliary clearance and thus should only be inhibited with caution. However, it is now known that some and perhaps most cough occurs as a consequence of increased sensitivity of the cough reflex and therefore could be suppressed with safety.
