The neurobiology of stress and development.

Stress is a part of every life to varying degrees, but individuals differ in their stress vulnerability. Stress is usefully viewed from a biological perspective; accordingly, it involves activation of neurobiological systems that preserve viability through change or allostasis. Although they are necessary for survival, frequent neurobiological stress responses increase the risk of physical and mental health problems, perhaps particularly when experienced during periods of rapid brain development. Recently, advances in noninvasive measurement techniques have resulted in a burgeoning of human developmental stress research. Here we review the anatomy and physiology of stress responding, discuss the relevant animal literature, and briefly outline what is currently known about the psychobiology of stress in human development, the critical role of social regulation of stress neurobiology, and the importance of individual differences as a lens through which to approach questions about stress experiences during development and child outcomes.

Lesion of the anteroventral third ventricle (AV3V) reduces hypothalamic activation and hypophyseal hormone secretion induced by lipopolysaccharide in rats.

This study examined whether electrolytic ablation of the periventricular anteroventral third ventricle (AV3V) region would affect the hypothalamic activation and the increase of hypophysial hormone secretion induced by systemic injection of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in rats. LPS significantly increased the number of cells showing Fos immunoreactivity in the paraventricular (PVN) and supraoptic (SON) nuclei of the hypothalamus (P<0.05) and also increased plasma levels of vasopressin, oxytocin, adrenocorticotropin and corticosterone (P<0.05). AV3V lesion significantly reduced LPS-induced Fos immunoreactivity (P<0.05) and vasopressin and oxytocin secretion (P<0.05). Elevations in adrenocorticotropin but not in plasma corticosterone after LPS were affected by prior AV3V lesions. These findings demonstrate that LPS-induced Fos expression in the PVN and SON, and hypophysial hormone secretion is dependent on the integrity of the AV3V region.

Effects of acute or chronic omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid treatment on behavioral, neuroendocrine and cytokine changes elicited by exogenous interleukin-1beta challenge.

Chronic omega-3 or omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid (n-3; n-6 respectively) treatment attenuated human interleukin-1beta (hIL-1beta; 5.0 microg/kg)-elicited rise of circulating ACTH levels and attenuated the sickness behavior and locomotor suppression elicited by the cytokine. Furthermore, hIL-1beta markedly elevated circulating levels of plasma IL-6, an effect attenuated by n-3, but not n-6 treatment. Such protective effects were not evident upon short-term (3 day) n-3 exposure. These results demonstrate that long-term administration of either n-3 or n-6 confers protection against several neuroendocrinological, immunological and behavioral actions of hIL-1beta challenge, although in general the effects of n-3 were more pronounced.
