Compact, efficient electronics based on the brain's neural system could yield implantable silicon retinas to restore vision, as well as robotic eyes and other smart sensors.

Field effect of screened charges: electrical detection of peptides and proteins by a thin-film resistor.

For many biotechnological applications the label-free detection of biomolecular interactions is becoming of outstanding importance. In this Article we report the direct electrical detection of small peptides and proteins by their intrinsic charges using a biofunctionalized thin-film resistor. The label-free selective and quantitative detection of small peptides and proteins is achieved using hydrophobized silicon-on-insulator (SOI) substrates functionalized with lipid membranes that incorporate metal-chelating lipids. The response of the nanometer-thin conducting silicon film to electrolyte screening effects is taken into account to determine quantitatively the charges of peptides. It is even possible to detect peptides with a single charge and to distinguish single charge variations of the analytes even in physiological electrolyte solutions. As the device is based on standard semiconductor technologies, parallelization and miniaturization of the SOI-based biosensor is achievable by standard CMOS technologies and thus a promising basis for high-throughput screening or biotechnological applications.

Removal of nanoparticles from CMP wastewater by magnetic seeding aggregation.

CMP wastewaters have high solids content resulted from abrasive nanoparticles. Tremendous amount of ultrapure water consumption also makes the removal of nanoparticles from CMP wastewaters an important issue. Magnetic seeding aggregation of silica nanoparticles from the oxide CMP wastewater is studied in this work. Magnetite nanoparticles were synthesized and used as seeding particles. The turbidity of the CMP wastewater was reduced from 110 NTU to 7 NTU when solution pH was 6 and no addition of salt. This is because silica and magnetite nanoparticles were highly oppositely charged and the aggregation between silica and magnetite nanoparticles was achieved by electrostatic attractions. When the seeded wastewater was placed in a magnetic field strength higher than 800 G, the turbidity of the CMP wastewater was reduced to 1 NTU, which was clearer than the CMP wastewater treated by many other technologies.

Inorganic oxide core, polymer shell nanocomposite as a high K gate dielectric for flexible electronics applications.

Organic/inorganic core shell nanoparticles have been synthesized using high K TiO(2) as the core nanoparticle, and polystyrene as the shell. This material is easy to process and forms transparent continuous thin films, which exhibit a dielectric constant enhancement of over 3 times that of bulk polystyrene. This new dielectric material has been incorporated into capacitors and thin film transistors (TFTs). Mobilities approaching 0.2 cm(2)/V.s have been measured for pentacene TFTs incorporating the new TiO(2) polystyrene nanostructured gate dielectric, indicating good surface properties for pentacene film growth. This novel strategy for generating high K flexible gate dielectrics will be of value in improving organic and flexible electronic device performance.
