A computerized data analysis system for electrogastrogram.

Abstract

A comprehensive computerized data analysis system for the electrogastrogram is presented in this paper. The electrogastrogram (EGG) is a cutaneous measurement of electrical activity of the stomach by positioning electrodes on the abdominal skin. Since the signal-to-noise ratio of the EGG is very low, visual analysis is impossible. The data analysis system presented in this paper contains a series of PC programs to perform: (a) data acquisition and real-time A/D conversion; (b) digital filter design and digital filtering; (c) adaptive cancellation of respiratory artifact; (d) smoothed power spectral analysis; (e) adaptive running spectral analysis; (f) two- or three-dimensional display of the EGG and analysis results. The basic principles of the system and sample results are presented.

Multidimensional data format specification: a generalization of the American College of Radiology-National Electric Manufacturers Association standards.

Multidimensional image data are becoming increasingly common in biomedical imaging. Three-dimensional visualization and analysis techniques based on three-dimensional image data have become an established discipline in biomedicine. Some imaging problems generate image data of even higher dimensions. It often becomes necessary, rather than just convenient, to consider the higher-dimensional data as a whole to adequately answer the underlying imaging questions. Despite this established need for convenient exchange of image and image-derived information, no exchange protocols are available that adequately meet the needs of multidimensional imaging systems. This paper describes an exchange protocol that has been designed after careful consideration of the common requirements of methodologies for visualization and analysis of multidimensional data. It is based on and is a generalization of the widely accepted American College of Radiology-National Electrical Manufacturers Association (ACR-NEMA) standards specified for two-dimensional images. It is implemented and actively being used in a data-, application-, and machine-independent software environment, being developed in the authors' department, for the visualization and analysis of multidimensional images.

Use of the SMPTE test pattern in picture archiving and communication systems.

In 1985 the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) published a Recommended Practice (RP-133) entitled Specifications for Medical Diagnostic Imaging Test Pattern for Television Monitors and Hard-copy Cameras. Since that time the SMPTE monochrome test pattern has been applied to the acceptance testing and quality control of video and image display systems, and hard-copy (film) recorders. The major features of the test pattern will be discussed along with applications and the problems demonstrated with the pattern. Furthermore, the test pattern will be used to demonstrate that color displays may exhibit only one-half of the resolution of a monochrome monitor whereas the display contrast (due to limited dynamic range) may be only 10 to 20% of that obtained with a monochrome display.
