Separated quadrupolar field experiment.

Abstract

We describe an NMR experiment that produces spectra correlating the first-order quadrupolar spectrum and the central transition spectrum of half-integer quadrupolar spins, allowing one to separate the quadrupolar parameters in overlapping spectra under both static and magic-angle-spinning conditions. Promising fields of applications include situations where the sample cannot easily be rotated, or where it cannot be rotated at the magic angle.

Secondary metabolites from Opuntia ficus-indica var. saboten.

A butanol fraction, from the methanolic extract of Opuntia ficus-indica var. saboten, on purification either by preparative TLC or reversed phase HPLC, yielded three chemical components: isorhamnetin 3-O-(6''-O-E-feruloyl)neohesperidoside (1), (6R)-9,10-dihydroxy-4,7-megastigmadien-3-one-9-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (2) and (6S)-9,10-dihydroxy-4,7-megastigmadien-3-one-9-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (3) along with 15 known compounds. Structures of compounds (1-3) were elucidated by aid of spectroscopic analyses. The absolute stereochemistry in compounds 2 and 3 was established with the help of CD data analysis and comparison with the literature data. In a DPPH radical scavenging assay, compound 1 showed moderate inhibitory activity (IC50 = 45.58 microg/ml).

Oligoresorcinols fold into double helices in water.

We report the first double helices with a controlled helicity in water based on oligoresorcinols as a new, simplest water-soluble structural motif. The molecular strands of the oligoresorcinols self-assemble into double helices with the aid of aromatic interactions in water as characterized by 1H NMR and absorption spectroscopies together with the X-ray crystallographic study of the pentamer. The double helix formation is sensitive to the chain length, solvent composition, and temperature. Moreover, a bias in the screw sense of the double helices was achieved by covalently attaching chiral substituents to both ends of the molecular strands.

Indirect detection of nuclear magnetic resonance via geometrically induced long-range dipolar fields.

We report the indirect detection of the magnetization of one spin species via the NMR signal of a second species. Our method relies on the control of long-range dipolar fields between two separate objects, in this case, a water droplet (sensor) immersed in a tube containing mineral oil (sample). Unlike prior experiments, no gradient pulses are used; rather, the setup geometry is exploited to select the part of the sample to be probed and modulate the spin alignment in the sensor. Our results are discussed in the context of Dipolar Field Microscopy, a proposed strategy in which the detector is a hyperpolarized tip.
