Gallium nitrate.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the therapeutic role of gallium nitrate in the treatment of hypercalcemia associated with malignancy and related disease states. DATA SOURCES: A literature search of English-language studies involving gallium nitrate for the period 1966-1991 using MEDLINE and the bibliographies of relevant articles. STUDY SELECTION: Because of the limited number of studies, all clinical trials were reviewed, with particular emphasis on Phase III comparative trials. Related investigative studies on the pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, and toxicity of gallium nitrate were also reviewed. DATA EXTRACTION: Two appraisers independently abstracted data from available clinical trials and evaluated trial quality. RESULTS OF DATA SYNTHESIS: Two Phase III comparative trials evaluating gallium nitrate in the treatment of hypercalcemia of malignancy have been completed. Gallium nitrate was shown to be superior to both calcitonin and etidronate disodium, based on the comparative percentage of patients achieving normocalcemia and the subsequent duration of normocalcemia. Both trials employed similar methodology. Positive therapeutic effects of gallium nitrate have also been demonstrated in small, noncomparative trials for hypercalcemia associated with parathyroid carcinoma, Paget's disease of bone, and osteolytic bone metastases. CONCLUSIONS: Gallium nitrate is effective in the treatment of hypercalcemia associated with malignancy and is appropriate for formulary addition. In certain clinical situations, it may be clearly advantageous over such agents as calcitonin, plicamycin, and etidronate. Further investigation is needed to define the limitations of nephrotoxicity and the therapeutic potential for other indications. Further comparative clinical trials of gallium nitrate versus bisphosphonates and plicamycin could also help define its relative clinical benefit.

Morphology control of layer-structured gallium selenide nanowires.

Layer-structured group III chalcogenides have highly anisotropic properties and are attractive materials for stable photocathodes and battery electrodes. We report the controlled synthesis and characterization of layer-structured GaSe nanowires via a catalyst-assisted vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) growth mechanism during GaSe powder evaporation. GaSe nanowires consist of Se-Ga-Ga-Se layers stacked together via van der Waals interactions to form belt-shaped nanowires with a growth direction along the [11-20], width along the [1-100], and height along the [0001] direction. Nanobelts exhibit a variety of morphologies including straight, zigzag, and saw-tooth shapes. These morphologies are realized by controlling the growth temperature and time so that the actual catalysts have a chemical composition of Au, Au-Ga alloy, or Ga. The participation of Ga in the VLS catalyst is important for achieving different morphologies of GaSe. In addition, GaSe nanotubes are also prepared by a slow growth process.

Luminescent dipyrrinato complexes of trivalent group 13 metal ions.

Although free dipyrrins (dipyrromethenes) do not strongly luminesce, certain dipyrrinato complexes of BF2 and zinc(II) are known to be intensely luminescent species. Two new dipyrrinato fluorophores, based on complexes with gallium(III) and indium(III), are described. Using a previously described meso-mesityl-substituted dipyrrin, namely 5-mesityldipyrrin (mesdpm), the complexes [Ga(mesdpm)3] and [In(mesdpm)3] were prepared and structurally characterized. The complexes display the expected octahedral geometry about the metal ions. In some solvents, such as hexanes, the complexes emit green light upon excitation with UV light at room temperature, with quantum yields of 2.4% ([Ga(mesdpm)3]) and 7.4% ([In(mesdpm)3]) and lifetimes in the low nanosecond range. Observations are consistent with assignment to ligand-localized transitions, and this interpretation is further confirmed by density functional calculations described herein. The new complexes are important additions to the widely used family of dipyrrin-based fluorescent species and show that dipyrrinato complexes containing metals other than BF2 and zinc(II) may be useful fluorophores.

Raman spectroscopic analysis of GeS2-Ga2S3-PbI2 chalcohalide glasses.

The structures of pseudo-binary GeS2-PbI2, Ga2S3(GaS)-PbI2 and pseudo-ternary GeS2-Ga2S3-PbI2 chalcohalide systems were investigated by Raman scattering spectroscopy. By evolving the vibrational bands as a function of PbI2 content, it was verified that the effect of addition of PbI2 to the glass network is threefold, namely: (i) the conversion of GeS4 tetrahedra to GeS3I and GeS2I2 structural units, (ii) the destruction of ethane-like S3Ga(Ge)-(Ge)GaS3 structural units and formation of GaS3I and GeS3I ones and (iii) formation of short S-S chains and [PbIn] structural units when the concentration of PbI2 is high.
