Automating research data collection.

Abstract

This article reviews the capabilities, advantages, and disadvantages of three forms of automated data collection-scannable data forms, Web-based forms, and handheld computers-compared with the current standard of data entry by hand on paper forms. Each of these methods is reviewed with respect to ease of use, experience required of designer, end-user training requirements, costs, flexibility, speed, accuracy/error rate, potential for data loss, need for technical support, and equipment and/or software requirements. A discussion of their appropriate application to various kinds of studies is included, followed by examples of research studies using each of these methods.

Human errors and violations in computer and information security: the viewpoint of network administrators and security specialists.

This paper describes human errors and violations of end users and network administration in computer and information security. This information is summarized in a conceptual framework for examining the human and organizational factors contributing to computer and information security. This framework includes human error taxonomies to describe the work conditions that contribute adversely to computer and information security, i.e. to security vulnerabilities and breaches. The issue of human error and violation in computer and information security was explored through a series of 16 interviews with network administrators and security specialists. The interviews were audio taped, transcribed, and analyzed by coding specific themes in a node structure. The result is an expanded framework that classifies types of human error and identifies specific human and organizational factors that contribute to computer and information security. Network administrators tended to view errors created by end users as more intentional than unintentional, while errors created by network administrators as more unintentional than intentional. Organizational factors, such as communication, security culture, policy, and organizational structure, were the most frequently cited factors associated with computer and information security.

Six methodological steps to build medical data warehouses for research.

PURPOSE: We propose a simple methodology for heterogeneous data collection and central repository-style database design in healthcare. Our method can be used with or without other software development frameworks, and we argue that its application can save a relevant amount of implementation effort. Also, we believe that the method can be used in other fields of research, especially those that have a strong interdisciplinary nature. BACKGROUND: The idea emerged during a healthcare research project, which consisted among others in grouping information from heterogeneous and distributed information sources. We developed this methodology by the lessons learned when we had to build a data repository, containing information about elderly patients flows in the UK's long-term care system (LTC). DESIGN: We explain thoroughly those aspects that influenced the methodology building. The methodology is defined by six steps, which can be aligned with various iterative development frameworks. We describe here the alignment of our methodology with the RUP (rational unified process) framework. The methodology emphasizes current trends, as early identification of critical requirements, data modelling, close and timely interaction with users and stakeholders, ontology building, quality management, and exception handling. RESULTS: Of a special interest is the ontological engineering aspect, which had the effects with the highest impact after the project. That is, it helped stakeholders to perform better collaborative negotiations that brought better solutions for the overall system investigated. An insight into the problems faced by others helps to lead the negotiators to win-win situations. We consider that this should be the social result of any project that collects data for better decision making that leads finally to enhanced global outcomes.

[Improvement in stroke care in a non-urban community hospital--quality of procedures before and after participating in a telemedical stroke network].

BACKGROUND: Although treatment in a stroke unit has been proven to be effective, most stroke patients in rural areas have no access to it. The community hospital of Ebersberg (Bavaria/Germany) joined the Telemedic Project for Integrative Stroke Care (TEMPiS) in order to optimize the quality of stroke care. This analysis focuses on changes in stroke management using generally accepted indicators for quality of acute stroke treatment. METHODS: The core elements consisted of the setting up of a stroke ward in the community hospital, continual stroke education and a 24-hour telemedical consultation service offered by stroke centers. Treatment of stroke patients was documented during two 12-months periods before the project was started start (i.e. retrospectively) and during the course of the project (prospectively). In addition, data on fatal outcome and institutionalization of patients who had lived at home before the qualifying event were collected 12 months after stroke onset. RESULTS: There were 299 admissions for stroke or transient ischemic attacks between 1 Nov 2001 and 31 Oct 2002, and 305 between 7 July 2003 and 6 June 2004. Length of in-hospital stay decreased from 12.1 to 9.2 days. More patients (10.3 vs. 1.3%) were transferred to other acute hospitals during the later period. Indicators for stroke care quality improved: numbers of cerebral imaging rose from 56.5% to 96.4%, of duplex sonography of cervical arteries from 43.5 to 72.8 %, of speech therapy from 0% to 50.8% and of occupational therapy from 0 to 33.4%. One year after admission, 18.9% and 17.2%, respectively, of the patients had died, while 10.2% and 6.1% were living in institutions. CONCLUSION: Participation in the TEMPiS network substantially improved stroke care quality according to national and international guidelines. These improvements may lead to a better prognosis after a stroke.
