Internet-capable publication database system.

Abstract

Scientific databases are generally accessible to the public via the Internet. Reports of most peer-reviewed (quotable) research is thus available to researchers and others. However, other reports and information of interest to researchers and teachers such as poster presentations at congresses, articles describing techniques and teaching material, and details of vocational and continuing education courses (nonquotable literature) generally do not appear in such databases. This nonquotable literature is often of great use to teachers. A project was therefore initiated at the Münster Dental Clinic which aimed to address the problem by developing a database of all publications and other printed material produced by the staff (faculty). After a systematic search, all such publications (quotable and nonquotable) were entered in the database which is partially accessible via the Internet and fully accessible via the Münster Dental Clinic's Intranet. The complete list can be found in the protected Intranet areas, which can be accessed by all the Dental Clinic's staff members. The database also permits Münster Clinic staff to access the Internet and locate those publications that are on the Internet by year of publication and topic.

FiRe and microarrays: a fast answer to burning questions.

FiRe is a user-friendly Excel macro designed to survey microarray data rapidly. This software interactively assembles data from different experiments and produces lists of candidate genes according to patterns of gene expression. Furthermore, macros bundled with FiRe can compare lists of genes, merge information from different spreadsheets, link candidates to information available from web-based databases, and produce heat-maps for easy visualization of microarray data. FiRe is freely available at http://www.unifr.ch/plantbio/FiRe/main.html .

Microarray data analysis made easy.

DNA microarrays are valuable tools for analyzing global gene expression. Because of the increasing popularity and the large volume of data produced, tools for facile microarray data analysis are essential. FiRe, a recently introduced computer program, has now solved the seemingly insuperable discrepancy between simplicity and evaluation of DNA microarray data. The program is available as a macro for the popular Microsoft Office Excel software and is user-friendly, interactive, versatile and platform-independent, paving the way for a further push in the evaluation of DNA microarrays.

An improved matched filter for blood vessel detection of digital retinal images.

The matched filter has been widely used in the detection of blood vessels of the human retina digital image. In this paper, the matched filter response to the detection of blood vessels is increased by proposing better filter parameters. These filter parameters are found by using an optimization procedure on 20 retina images of the DRIVE database. Comparisons with other approaches show that the matched filter that uses the newly found parameters outperforms the matched filter that uses the classical filter parameters as well as some vessel detection techniques. A technique is also discussed to find the best threshold value for the continuous matched filter output image and hence the best segmented vessel image.
