Development of solid-phase extraction and solid-phase microextraction methods for the determination of chlorophenols in cork macerate and wine samples.

Abstract

Tri-, tetra- and pentachlorophenol (TCP, TeCP and PCP) can be considered the precursors in the formation of corresponding chloroanisoles, known to be powerful odorants in corks and wine. Determining the presence of these chlorophenolic compounds in cork soaking solutions (ethanol/water mixtures, 12% (v/v) ethanol used for cork quality control testing), or in wine can be achieved by acetylation/gas chromatography electron-capture detection. In order to reach the required sensitivity, a previous preconcentration step is necessary. Solid-phase extraction (SPE) and headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) have given good results for the preconcentration of TCP, TeCP and PCP in such matrices. The use of Oasis HLB cartridges gives acceptable recoveries for the three compounds when different volumes (50-250 mL) of cork macerate with concentrations ranging from 20 to 150 ng/L are processed. Preconcentration based on HS-SPME has also been optimised with a 100 microm polydimethylsiloxane fibre and in situ derivatization. The HS-SPME method allows chlorophenols in a cork soaking solution and in wine to be determined with a limit of detection of 1 ng/L for each compound (in cork macerate) and a repeatability of around 0.5%-5% (n=8) for a concentration level of 30 ng/L.

Isocomplestatin: total synthesis and stereochemical revision.

A Pd-mediated method for preparation of the strained macrocyclic moiety of complestatins is disclosed. Through stereoselective synthesis of model macrocycles and the S atropisomer of complestatin, the stereochemical identity of the anti-HIV agent complestatin is established. Investigations described herein illustrate that the compound previously reported as isocomplestatin is the same as complestatin. Thus, the S atropisomer of complestatin is the true isocomplestatin and has not been isolated as a natural product.

A study of kinetic modelling and reaction pathway of 2,4-dichlorophenol transformation by photo-fenton-like oxidation.

The degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) by the photo-Fenton-like (Fe3+/H2O2/UVC) process under various reaction conditions was investigated. It was interesting to find that the reaction kinetics of 2,4-DCP in Fe3+/H2O2/UVC systems varied depending on the initial [Fe3+] concentration. A pseudo first-order kinetic and a non-conventional kinetic were discovered at low and higher [Fe3+] concentrations, respectively. A model was used to simulate the non-conventional kinetic process, where two character parameters (the initial decay rate and the final decay fraction) were found to be critical in determining the process. The two parameters successfully quantify the photo-Fenton-like oxidation under different concentrations of [Fe3+] and [H2O2] and the corresponding ratios of Fe(III)/H2O2. The reaction intermediates were identified by an LC/MS analysis and a reaction mechanism was proposed.

Phenol and substituted phenols AOPs remediation.

The oxidation of phenol and two substituted species (4-nitrophenol and 4-chlorophenol) has been carried out by means of the O3, UV-vis, O3+UV-vis, TiO2+UV-vis, O(3)+UV-vis+TiO2 and O3+TiO2 systems. From UV-vis experiments, the quantum yield of these organics has been calculated (0.018, 0.005 and 0.017 mol per Einstein for phenol, 4-nitrophenol and 4-chlorophenol, respectively). Broadly speaking, the addition of titania powder results in a slight inhibition of the parent compound degradation rate, although a positive effect is experienced when measuring the chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total organic carbon (TOC) removals. Amongst the technologies investigated, those combining ozone and radiation show the best efficiency in terms of phenols elimination and also COD and TOC decay rates. A simple economy analysis of the processes illustrates how the combinations O3+UV-vis and O3+UV-vis+TiO2 are the most attractive technologies, although some additional considerations have to be taken into account.
