Problem-based learning definition, implementation and opportunities for collaboration.

Abstract

Since first being implemented more than 30 years ago, problem-based learning has become an increasingly popular approach to education. More and more dental schools in the United States and internationally are implementing some aspect of PBL into their curriculum. This paper will define PBL, describe how it is implemented within various institutions and discuss the potential for using PBL as the basis for collaboration among institutions.

Coding-complete genome sequence of grapevine leafroll-associated virus 13 from grapevine in California.

In this study, we report the coding-complete genome sequence of Grapevine leafroll-associated virus 13 (GLRaV-13), isolate CA8881, detected in Vitis vinifera in California, USA. The genome sequence exhibited over 95% nucleotide identity with previously reported GLRaV-13 isolates and contributed to better understanding of the genetic diversity of ampeloviruses infecting grapevine.

Interventions to increase influenza vaccination of health-care workers--California and Minnesota.

Vaccination of health-care workers (HCWs) has been shown to reduce influenza infection and absenteeism among HCWs, prevent mortality in their patients, and result in financial savings to sponsoring health institutions. However, influenza vaccination coverage among HCWs in the United States remains low; in 2003, coverage among HCWs was 40.1%. This report describes strategies implemented in three clinical settings that increased the proportion of HCWs who received influenza vaccination. The results demonstrate the value of making influenza vaccination convenient and available at no cost to HCWs.
