Recent studies have added new dimensions to the fund of knowledge on vitamin D. In addition to the classic role of vitamin D in preventing rickets and osteomalacia, a preventive effect against osteoporotic fractures has been convincingly established, and abundant evidence suggests a role in preventing malignancies and autoimmune diseases. Serum 25-OH-vitamin D assay is a simple test for evaluating vitamin D status. However, recent review articles indicate that current reference ranges for serum 25-OH-vitamin D are too low. An appropriate lower normal limit may be between 50-100 nmol/l (20-40 ng/ml). Standard supplement dosages may fail to provide concentrations above this range.
The structures of the posterolateral corner of the knee are increasingly recognized as fulfilling an important role in maintaining knee stability. The posterolateral aspect of the knee is stabilized by a complex anatomy of osseous, myotendinous and ligamentous structures. Unrecognized injuries to this part of the knee are a cause of failure of cruciate ligament reconstruction. This review focuses on the anatomy and common injury patterns involving the posterolateral corner of the knee, with emphasis on magnetic resonance imaging.
Chest radiographs frequently underestimate the severity and extent of chest trauma and, in some cases, fail to detect the presence of injury. CT is more sensitive than chest radiography in the detection of pulmonary, pleural, and osseous abnormalities in the patient who has chest trauma. With the advent of multidetector CT (MDCT), high-quality multiplanar reformations are obtained easily and add to the diagnostic capabilities of MDCT. This article reviews the radiographic and CT findings of chest wall, pleural, and pulmonary injuries that are seen in the patient who has experienced blunt thoracic trauma.
