[Glaucoma Service Database].

Abstract

We present the common problems related to clinical databases. The Glaucoma Service Database created in our clinic is an attempt of developing the optimal medical database. The system organizes our repository of clinical data. It consist of 3 modules: 1) the users list with predefined privileges and rights, 2) lists of coded data for further use, that facilitate filling in the fields, 3) clinical details of all patients. The user interface of our database is very simply, thus it is very easy to use it even by unskilled staff. The accuracy of data is protected by system's internal algorithms. It could be used to investigate clinical epidemiology, risk assessment, post-marketing surveillance of drugs, practice variation and decision analysis. Data from Glaucoma Service Database can also help in the management of health service.

Annotating the human proteome.

The completion of the human genome has shifted the attention from deciphering the sequence to the identification and characterization of the encoded components. The identification and functional annotation of the proteome is here of special interest and starts with the identification of genes and transcripts as a prerequisite of proteome annotation. Gene predictions are very powerful in predicting most of the exons in a genome, but reliable gene structure predictions of both known and novel genes are dependent on existing transcript and protein information. An enormous amount of data already exists on the function of many human proteins, but this is scattered over many resources. Public domain databases are required to manage and collate this information and present it to the user community in both a human and machine readable manner.

Herbs or natural products that may cause cancer and harm part four of a four-part series.

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVES: To provide evidence-based research information about 27 herbs and natural products that have the potential to cause cancer and harm. DATA SOURCES: Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database and Lawrence Review of Natural Products Monograph System. Information about these herbs has been found in evidence-based studies cited in the references. DATA SYNTHESIS: Early research shows that some herbs and natural products appear to have the potential to cause cancer and harm. Oncology nurses who receive this information can become resources for patients and other healthcare professionals. CONCLUSIONS: Consumers and healthcare professionals are wise to weigh the benefits or risks and possibly limit or avoid the use of these products. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING: The table and text in this article are presented as quick resources for healthcare professionals working in clinical oncology.
