Effect of molar mass of an experimental primer on shear bond strength to dentin.

A novel oligomer was synthesized in different molecular masses and used as a primer in dentin bonding. The hypothesis was that an intermediate molecular mass would optimize the conflicting needs for diffusion into etched dentin (low M(w)) and high mechanical properties (high M(w)). The initial oligomer synthesized was tert butylmethacrylate-co-maleic anhydride, which was further reacted to add hyrdoxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) across the anhydride. The oligomer was synthesized in a series of molecular masses from approximately 800-6000 amu. The oligomer with an average M(w) of approximately 1000 amu provided the highest bond strength (16 MPa), with both lower and higher molar mass oligomers producing lower bond strengths. A polynomial model was fitted to the data with an R(2) = 0.606, while a linear model only had an R(2) = 0.534. This implies that the graph of molar mass to bond strength has a maximum in the range of molar masses examined, and that an optimum molar mass can be found between 800 and 6000 amu.

The use of optical parametric oscillator for harmonic generation and two-photon UV fluorescence microscopy.

Ultrafast lasers have found increasing use in scanning optical microscopy due to their very high peak power in generating multiphoton excitations. A mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser is often employed for such purposes. Together with a synchronously pumped optical parametric oscillator (OPO), the spectral range available can be extended to 1,050-1,300 nm. This broader range available greatly facilitates the excitation of second harmonic generation (SHG) and third harmonic generation (THG) due to better satisfaction of phase matching condition that is achieved with a longer excitation wavelength. Dental sections are then investigated with the contrasts from harmonic generation. In addition, through intra-cavity doubling wavelengths from 525-650 nm are made available for effective two-photon (2-p) excitation with the equivalent photon energy in the UVB range (290-320 nm) and beyond. This new capacity allows UV (auto-) fluorescence excitation and imaging, for example, from some amino acids, such as tyrosine, tryptophan, and glycine.

Odontoblasts: the cells forming and maintaining dentine.

Odontoblasts are tall columnar cells located at the periphery of the dental pulp. They derive from ectomesenchymal cells originated by migration of neural crest cells during the early craniofacial development. Odontoblasts form the dentine, a collagen-based mineralized tissue, through secretion of its collagenous and noncollagenous organic matrix components and by control the mineralization process. A conspicuous cell process arises from the cell body of odontoblasts and penetrates into the mineralized dentine. After dentinogenesis, odontoblasts deposit new layers of dentine throughout life and might also form a type of reactionary/reparative dentine in response to dental caries and other external factors may affect teeth.
