The evolving competitive realities in seeking admission to schools of dentistry and postdoctoral specialty and advanced general dentistry programs are considered against the background in which many current older male practitioners entered into their training. The increasing numbers of female and minority group applicants, together with the large numbers of non-U.S. citizens in graduate programs, could present a formidable competitive barrier for these older dentists.
