OBJECTIVE: To present a case of hydatid disease of the first rib as a rare cause of thoracic outlet syndrome. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 57-year-old female patient who had suffered from pain on the left shoulder radiating to the arm and numbness and weakness on the left arm for 3 months was admitted to our hospital. She had undergone an operation due to a mass lesion of the first rib compressing the thoracic outlet which was detected in the preoperative examinations. During the intraoperative examination it was decided that the lesion was a hydatid cyst and the first rib was totally resected. CONCLUSION: This report shows that hydatid disease should be taken into consideration amongst the tumoral diseases of the first rib as a very rare cause of thoracic outlet syndrome.
Swiss guidelines have been published recently for Lyme disease, but three other zoonoses have motivated a particular attention lately because they cause or might cause illnesses in Switzerland. The incidence of tick-borne encephalitis is clearly increasing since 2004. The vaccination of persons living or residing temporally in risk areas is now routinely recommended. Although eradicated in wild mammals since 1996, rabies still constitutes a threat through bats and illegally imported pets. The epidemiology of echinococcosis is influenced by the increase in fox populations in urban areas. This could result in a higher prevalence of the disease in dogs and thus a higher risk of exposure for humans.
A splenic hydatid cyst is a rare clinical entity from among abdominal hydatid cysts, even in endemic countries. Here, a case with lumbar pain due to a giant splenic hydatid cyst is presented. The importance of this case is that the patient presented at the clinic with only lumbar pain. Initial direct abdominal plain radiography showed a giant abdominal calcification in the spleen and further examinations revealed involvement of three organs: spleen, lung, and liver.
