[On the problem of the decrease in the mortality of premature infants].

The aim of this review is to emphasize the role of fetal MR in the evaluation of the supratentorial space. The advantages of MRI compared to US are stressed in three fields of application: cerebral biometry, sulcation and cerebral parenchyma. In each field, normal data are displayed and MR applications with patterns of the main pathologies are briefly described.

Sample sizes for clinical trials with normal data.

This article gives an overview of sample size calculations for parallel group and cross-over studies with Normal data. Sample size derivation is given for trials where the objective is to demonstrate: superiority, equivalence, non-inferiority, bioequivalence and estimation to a given precision, for different types I and II errors. It is demonstrated how the different trial objectives influence the null and alternative hypotheses of the trials and how these hypotheses influence the calculations. Sample size tables for the different types of trials and worked examples are given.

The statistical structure of natural light patterns determines perceived light intensity.

The same target luminance in different contexts can elicit markedly different perceptions of brightness, a fact that has long puzzled vision scientists. Here we test the proposal that the visual system encodes not luminance as such but rather the statistical relationship of a particular luminance to all possible luminance values experienced in natural contexts during evolution. This statistical conception of vision was validated by using a database of natural scenes in which we could determine the probability distribution functions of co-occurring target and contextual luminance values. The distribution functions obtained in this way predict target brightness in response to a variety of challenging stimuli, thus explaining these otherwise puzzling percepts. That brightness is determined by the statistics of natural light patterns implies that the relevant neural circuitry is specifically organized to generate these probabilistic responses.
