[Interference and interference-restraining in flame-emitting method].

Abstract

When the flame-emitting method is used to determine certain element of alkali metal and alkaline-earth metal, some other external substances will interfere in the sample-determing. This passage put forwards some efficient ways of restraining the interference. It suggests that appropriate kinds of releasing agent should be added, and the radiant energy of flame itself should be controlled so as to find out the best way to improve the accuracy of analysing.

[Emerging infectious diseases in the realm of complexity: implications for scientific and technological policies].

The current emergence and global dissemination of some new and resurgent infectious diseases have surpassed national frontiers, increasingly affecting developing and also developed countries. This study stresses that this outburst is affecting the predictability of dominant health transition approaches. This paper analyses, from epistemological and policy viewpoints, alternative approaches in order to confront these new global epidemiological trends.

[Arterial hypertension in Ilha do Governador, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: II. Prevalence].

The aim of this paper (the second of two) is to present the basic results of a cross-sectional study on arterial hypertension in adults in Ilha do Governador (a district of the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), with a representative sample of the population, stratified by the census tracts' mean household income (low, median, and high). Overall, prevalence of uncontrolled hypertension in Ilha do Governador was 16.1% (C.I. of 95%: 13.4 to 18.9%), and with the inclusion of controlled hypertensive individuals this figure rose to 24.9% (C I. of 95%: 21.7 to 28.7%). Under both criteria (whether including controlled hypertensive individuals or not), higher prevalences were from low-income strata, while lower ones were from the high-income strata. However, it was only possible to reject the hypothesis of strata homogeneity of prevalences (including controlled hypertensives), and even then at a 10% level of significance, when the confounding effect of age was adjusted. Proportionally, women with hypertension appear to control their blood pressure levels better than men in all age brackets.

[Avoidable mortality. The case of the North border of Mexico, 1980-1990].

When the death causes are understood as a result of morbility process that may have been avoided with different kinds of economic, social and welfare services policies and the advance of scientific and technologic knowledges, there is clearly a structural determinism so that many population social sectors can't reach the "modern epidemiological patterns". This study used annual data bases of register death 1979-1991 brought by INEGI/DGE-SSA from five Mexican federal border entities. It were adjusted by Preston-Coale method and Life Tables were generated in 1980 and 1990. The percentage contributions of avoidable causes' groups by sex and age of the increases in the Expectation of Life (Ex) were calculated in the same years following Pollard's method. As result of this research, limited increments of Ex were found because of the permanence of high contribution of deaths, that may have been avoided (50%). Contrary to popular beliefs, Ex male diminished the difference compared with Ex female. Highest male mortality is explained even for this kind of causes, where accidents and violence deaths are bringing high percentages of total mortality.
