Nomograms as predictive models.

Abstract

Nomograms are valuable tools for estimating the likelihood of cancer being diagnosed, the pathologic features of a localized cancer, and the prognosis of a patient after treatment. Although the available nomograms are reasonably accurate, better predictive factors including additional clinical factors and new molecular analyses are needed to improve the accuracy or predictions. Nomogram performance will also be enhanced with larger datasets of patients and longer follow-up. We review the concepts of risk stratification and the development and use of nomograms as predictive tools.

[Expert systems as the instrument for postop diseases].

There was proposed an expert system for conduction of differential diagnosis of surgical diseases, stimulating the mathematic models creation, the filling up of tables of the features values of all diagnostic hypothesis possible with subsequent staged exception of the least adequate of them. The expert diagnostic system proposed may be applied in clinical practice and pedagogic process while teaching of students.

SmartQuery: context-sensitive links to medical knowledge sources from the electronic patient record.

Physicians have many unmet information needs that arise in the course of patient care. Many clinical questions could potentially be answered by streamlined access to medical literature, textbooks, and clinical guidelines in the context of the electronic medical record. We designed and implemented SmartQuery, a prototype application to provide context-sensitive links from an electronic patient record to relevant medical knowledge sources, then performed a preliminary user evaluation. Our results suggest that such an application may be clinically useful, and provide some insight into problems and priorities for future development.
