Structural information theory based on electronic configurations.

Abstract

The topic of this paper is how different forms of acoustical information may be measured. The specific problem addressed is how information is transferred from a three-dimensional source of longitudinal waves to a one-dimensional vibrating membrane. In previous papers1,12, the author has demonstrated through the derivation of different forms on informational 'quanta' that the modulating envelopes for the wave packets representing these quanta are functional solutions to the Weber equation (the Helmholtz equation in parabolic cylinder coordinates). The geometrical structure described by the Weber equation suggests a resonance effect existing between an 'angular momentum' involving an 'azimuthal quantum number' and one involving a 'magnetic quantum number' in analogy with structural chemistry formulations12. In the present paper, the geometrical formulation is carried further. A sound source is commonly spherical, therefore solutions are found for the wave equation in spherical coordinates, giving a precise meaning to the 'azimuthal' and 'magnetic quantum number' analogy. These informational wave packets are then translated into a one-dimensional representation because of the nature of the receiver (the tympanic membrane). The difference between descriptions of electromagnetic and acoustical forms of energy is presented as consisting in the number of variables remaining constant in the acoustical formulation (as compared with the electromagnetic) but not in the basic geometrical formulations, which are primary.

Hearing preservation surgery in vestibular schwannoma.

OBJECTIVES: To study the effect of pre-operative hearing level and tumour size on the hearing outcome of hearing preservation surgery for vestibular schwannoma. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: A review of literature conducted at Gruppo Otologico, a tertiary referral centre for neurotology and skull base surgery. RESULTS: A total of 1993 patients in 16 publications addressing the topic of hearing preservation surgery in vestibular schwannoma were analysed. The American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery hearing classification system was the classification upon which we based our analysis. CONCLUSION: Defining hearing preservation as class-A hearing, there was a strong inverse relationship between pre-operative hearing and post-operative hearing levels and between tumour size and post-operative hearing levels.

Multihormonal resistance to parathyroid hormone, thyroid stimulating hormone, and other hormonal and neurosensory stimuli in patients with pseudohypoparathyroidism.

In patients with pseudohypoparathyroidism, hormonal resistance first affects parathyroid hormone (PTH), which leads to calcipenia, a decrease in renal vitamin D activation, and a tendency to bone receptor remodeling. However, because G proteins are ubiquitously distributed, multiple hormonal resistance occurs in pseudohypoparathyroidism type Ia and type Ic, impairing responses to other calciotropic hormones (PTHrP, calcitonin), TSH, and also pituitary and hypothalamic hormones, and to neurosensory stimuli. The diversity of multihormonal resistance contributes to the various phenotypes of the disease. Some clinical discomfort and medical consequences of the disease can be treated or prevented with hormone supplementation or modulation.
