Fire safety essentials.

Abstract

Fire prevention and protection are not complex. The basic principles for avoiding fires are well known and relatively simple to implement. Handling fire issues effectively is not always easy, though. It requires careful consideration about the hazards of our operations, the development of effective strategies for handling these hazards, and constant vigilance to ensure these methods are implemented effectively every day.

Fire fighting and its influence on the body.

Working conditions for fire fighters can be described according to the environment temperature and the incident radiant heat flux. Measurements for this study in buildings for fire fighting training have shown that fire fighters are typically exposed to radiant heat fluxes of between 5 and 10 kWm(-2) during this kind of exercise. The heat load can nevertheless be much higher. In one case, 42 kWm(-2) was measured. The temperatures reached between 100 and 190 degrees C at 1 m above ground, going up to 278 degrees C in one case. Human trials have been performed with 17 fire fighters. After exercises (about 15 min) in a heated room, the mean core temperature of the fire fighters rose by 0.6 degrees C with a surrounding temperature of 31 degrees C and 1.0 degrees C with 38 degrees C. The sweat production varied from 0.7 to 2.1 lh(-1); 16% to 45% of sweat remained in the clothing layers. During the exercises in the training buildings, a mean of 48 degrees C has been measured between fire fighters' clothing and workwear. These conditions lead to an increase of the relative humidity in all the jackets up to 100%. When the fire fighters came out of the fire, the humidity remained at this level in the PVC coated jackets while it was in some cases strongly reduced in breathable jackets.

Fire survival of lowland tropical rain forest trees in relation to stem diameter and topographic position.

The objective of this study was to relate patterns in forest structure, tree species diversity, and tree species composition to stem diameters and topography in unburned, once burned and twice burned lowland dipterocarp rain forests in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. To do this four unburned old growth forests were compared with three forests that burned once (1997/1998) and three forests that burned twice (1982/1983 and 1997/1998). Fire resulted in a strong reduction of climax tree density which was negatively related to tree diameter. However, a disproportionate reduction in small diameter understorey climax tree species occurred only after repeated fires. Climax tree species in both burned forest types were most common in swamps, river valleys and on lower slopes, while their density was much lower on places higher along hillsides. In unburned forest the opposite was observed, with climax tree density increasing steadily from swamp and river valleys to upper slopes and ridges. In contrast to climax trees, pioneer trees were abundant throughout the burned forest, with highest numbers on hill sides and ridges. Our results indicate that both diameter and topographic position of trees strongly affect their fire survival chances in tropical lowland forests.

The prediction of the flash point for binary aqueous-organic solutions.

A mathematical model, which may be used for predicting the flash point of aqueous-organic solutions, has been proposed and subsequently verified by experimentally-derived data. The results reveal that this model is able to precisely predict the flash point over the entire composition range of binary aqueous-organic solutions by way of utilizing the flash point data pertaining to the flammable component. The derivative of flash point with respect to composition (solution composition effect upon flash point) can be applied to process safety design/operation in order to identify as to whether the dilution of a flammable liquid solution with water is effective in reducing the fire and explosion hazard of the solution at a specified composition. Such a derivative equation was thus derived based upon the flash point prediction model referred to above and then verified by the application of experimentally-derived data.
