Developing a teaching portfolio.

Abstract

Teaching portfolios--a compilation of carefully selected materials that describe the faculty member's teaching activities in the classroom, clinical practice, and other settings--are being used more widely for documenting teaching effectiveness in nursing education programs. The purpose of the teaching portfolio is to document the full range of teaching competencies of the faculty member over a period of time. This article describes teaching portfolios and their uses in nursing education, items to include in a portfolio, and how to develop a portfolio.

[Ethics, applied ethics, professional ethics].

This study is concerned with "The Familiarity of Basic Rules in Professional Ethics Amongst Nursing Staff Members". Here the codification of norms in professional ethics is understood to be a necessary step on the way to individual nursing ethics. A survey on the study topic showed that there is a lack of familiarity in Germany. Therefore the authors conclude that German nursing has not yet reached this level of individual ethics. As it became clear in the survey that there is a general request for more information, the authors feel bound to demand better coverage of the topic in both basic and further training. The ethics of nursing, however, are applied ethics. In the following discourse first of all the authors will define the term "ethics" and explain the characteristics which are of importance in the present day situation. Secondly, they will ask what "applied ethics" can be against this background. Finally, the authors will discuss what "norms" are as regards professional ethics, how and why they develop and of what relevance they may be with respect to the corresponding ethics applied.

Student nurse attrition from pre-registration courses: investigating methodological issues.

There has been increasing recent interest in student nurse attrition. Despite a long history of research into the problem, attrition rates remain a cause for concern. This paper presents a review of the research undertaken in the UK, together with an international comparison. The foci of previous studies have been diverse and have included investigation of students' leaving reasons, their experience of stress, and course-related difficulties of students in progress. This review illustrates the complexity of issues surrounding student nurse discontinuation, highlighting a number of methodological limitations of prior research. These include the lack of a common definition of attrition, low response rates in surveys, and the imprecise definition of categories of leaving reasons. There is also a dearth of studies based on the perspectives of students. In the UK there is little documentation of whether measures have been adopted to reduce attrition and there is no evidence of evaluation. If future research is to be aimed at reducing attrition, these conceptual and methodological issues need to be addressed.
