PURPOSE: To clinically evaluate an all-ceramic restorative system (Finesse All-Ceramic) when used in conjunction with an ultra-low fusing porcelain (Finesse) using bonded esthetic resin cements (Enforce & Calibra). METHODS: 40 posterior and anterior crowns, 20 all-ceramic inlays and onlays, and 26 veneers were placed in 43 patients. Standard ceramic preparations were performed followed by conventional polyvinylsiloxane (Aquasil) impression techniques using cord retraction. The bonded resin cement was used to place the restorations following manufacturer's instructions. A majority of restorations (95-100%) were evaluated to be optimal at baseline (B), 6, 12, and 24 months using a modified Ryge criteria for the following categories: color match, marginal adaptation, porcelain staining, secondary caries, postoperative sensitivity, and retention. RESULTS: There were sufficient shades available to obtain desired esthetic result with 98% of all restorations being rated Alfa for shade match to Vita Lumin shade guide. The overall 2-year success rate (inlay/onlays, crowns, and veneers) was 98.75%.
AIM: The aim of this in vitro study was to compare the marginal adaptation achieved by two obturation techniques (lateral condensation and Thermafil) using human teeth prepared by continuous rotation with the HERO 642(R) system. METHOD: The percentages of gaps and sealer on the root canal surface were determined by analysing the images of 12 sections per tooth. Tubule sealer penetration was assessed by backscattered scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectrometry microanalysis. RESULTS: The Thermafil obturation technique resulted in virtually no gaps and very low amounts of sealer on the root surface, unlike the lateral condensation technique. Tubule sealer penetration occurred with both techniques, but was deeper, especially in the mid and apical zones, with the lateral condensation technique.
This study aimed to evaluate the quality of gutta-percha (GP) root canal fillings and their adaptation to the root canal walls, when the System B was used in three steps and a single step to fill three different split-tooth models. Each model was filled 10 times in two different ways. Group A: the System B plugger was used to fill the apical 3 mm of the canal in three steps, and then the Obtura II was used to backfill the rest of the canal. Group B: the System B plugger was inserted just once to a distance 3 mm short of the working length and then backfilled as in Group A. Replication of artificial depressions, presence of voids within the GP mass, and presence of spaces between the GP mass and the root canal walls were evaluated and scored. The individual scores of each parameter evaluated were compared between the two groups and statistically analyzed by use of the Mann-Whitney U test. Group A showed statistically significant (p < 0.05) better scores than Group B concerning the replication of artificial depressions and spaces between the GP mass and the canal walls. It was concluded that better adaptation of the GP mass to the canal walls in the apical third was obtained when the System B plugger was used in three steps.
