Computerized decision support systems: implications for practice.

Abstract

The informatics literature variously defines Computerized Decision Support (CDS) systems. These definitions are sometimes narrow and sometime broad, leading to occasional confusion in terminology. For purposes of this paper, a broad definition that enjoys some professional consensus has been adapted from Langston and colleagues: CDS systems encompass any computer software employing a knowledge base (facts and/or rules) designed for use by a clinician involved in patient care, as a direct aid to clinical decision-making.

Risk based methodology for safety improvements in ports.

With the introduction of the Formal Safety Assessment in the International Maritime Organisation decision making process regarding new regulations, and the recent tanker disasters resulting in extensive oil pollution, the public and political pressure to improve safety in ports and the shipping industry has increased. Considering that some kind of Safety Report (case) regulations related to marine operations have not been established, and that the ports and shipping industry are at the onset of safety regimes utilised in other industries, a step wise methodology for safety improvements in ports has been developed. In the first step, the hazard identification and the qualitative risk assessment is carried out to establish hazard barriers which are or should be in place to prevent hazards from being released; the controls for managing these hazards are then developed and integrated into the Safety Management System (SMS). In the second and optional step, the areas of high risk are investigated in detail and the approach for risk quantification discussed. The use of the quantitative risk assessment results is illustrated in two examples.

Computers will become increasingly important for psychological assessment: not that there's anything wrong with that!

Though one can expect that computer programs will become increasingly important for psychological assessment, current automated assessment programs and statistical-prediction rules are of limited value. Validity has not been clearly established for many automated assessment programs. Statistical-prediction rules are of limited value because they have typically been based on limited information that has not been demonstrated to be optimal and they have almost never been shown to be powerful. Recommendations are made for building and evaluating new computer programs. Finally, comments are made about the ethics of using computers to make judgments.
