Abstract

The need for collaboration and cooperation in health care delivery is not news. But one of the first requests often made by leaders and others promoting collaborative work in organizations is for a "facilitator course." As the authors developed more knowledge about the real need, they understood that many of the barriers to collaborative work and learning in organizations can be reduced only by the top leaders, not by expert facilitators. The central knowledge that leaders need to support collaborative work is appreciation of work as a system.

The Internet and clinical psychology: a general review of the implications.

The Internet has grown exponentially from its original conception and now takes the form of a vast network of interconnected computers. It encompasses such a wide arena within science that its impact cannot be ignored. This article reviews some of the areas where the Internet is relevant to Clinical Psychology. Three main areas identified and expanded upon are (i) use of the Internet as a communication medium within this domain, (ii) teaching of the discipline, and (iii) use of the Internet as a tool for psychological research. Within these three areas, examples of the applicability of the Internet are discussed as well as its limitations. In summary, use of the Internet within the psychological domain has many advantages and as such should be embraced by the clinical psychologist.

Problem-based learning in a new Canadian curriculum.

Problem-based learning (PBL) is a method of group learning that uses true-to-life problems as a stimulus for students to learn problem-solving skills and acquire knowledge about the basic and clinical sciences. This article documents the design and implementation of PBL in a second year course in the new curriculum of the University of Ottawa School of Nursing's Generic Program. The learning and teaching experiences of students and facilitators in this PBL course are described. As a way to determine students' perception of their learning using PBL, they were asked to respond to four questions. The most frequently described thinking processes were problem solving, nursing process and group process. When asked to describe the learning they derived from PBL, as differentiated from other instructional methods, students identified group process and problem solving most often. The most frequently identified factors that influenced performance and learning in PBL were positive attitude and group effort. The factors that affected the facilitators' performance of their role were large group size, insufficient practice of facilitator skills and PBL preparation. To enhance group process, facilitators modelled and shared roles. They fostered student motivation and development through formative evaluation. PBL produced clear benefits for students, such as increased autonomous learning, critical thinking, problem solving and communication. For facilitators, PBL was a liberation from the traditional role of 'content expert and super consultant'.

Key challenges and concepts in health risk communication: perspectives of agency practitioners.

The public demands that federal agencies provide information that is responsive to their fears and explains health risks clearly. In 1998 the Health Risk Communication Coordination Committee of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, a federal public health agency, conducted three focus groups with agency staff to identify current knowledge and understanding of health risk communication (HRC); HRC issues, problems, and best practices; and most appropriate HRC training content. The results indicate a need for clearer communications with communities, greater sensitivity to community concerns and fears, more balanced media coverage, and more accuracy in reporting, among other findings.
