Abalone genomics reveals an ancient asymmetry axis and the multifunctionality of the mantle.

Gastropod diversification represents one of the most spectacular evolutionary radiations, underpinned by a fundamentally asymmetric body plan and diverse pigmentation patterns. To understand the genetic underpinnings of these cardinal traits, we constructed a chromosome-level genome assembly for the rainbow abalone, Haliotis iris. Integrating comparative genomics, histoembryology, and molecular assays, we identify a conserved regulatory association between the long non-coding RNA lncRNA1 and pitx that is associated with asymmetric mantle development. In H. iris, this association is supported by chromatin-contact evidence and exploratory data suggesting a possible miRNA-associated post-transcriptional component. Furthermore, we identify a wnt-mitf-tyr framework for melanogenesis and show that the mantle is the primary site of melanin synthesis. Concurrently, we identify mantle-enriched prestin genes that are vibration-responsive, consistent with a possible sensory specialization of the mantle. These findings provide molecular insight into asymmetry, pigmentation, and mantle multifunctionality in gastropods.

Draft genomes of Limimaricola soesokkakensis TX01 isolated from the light organ of Anomalops katoptron in Indonesian waters.

The draft genome sequence of Limimaricola soesokkakensis TX01, isolated from the light organ of Anomalops katoptron, which lives in the region of the Banda Islands, Indonesia. The assembled genome is 4,041,441 base pairs in length, distributed across 69 contigs, with a GC content of 67.21%, and encodes 3,823 predicted protein-coding genes.

[The effect of plasm radiofrequency at low temperature in treatment of chronic rhinitis on nasal airway resistance].

OBJECTIVE: The main purpose of the study is to observe the effect of plasm radiofrequency at low temperature in treatment of chronic rhinitis on nasal airway resistance (NAR). METHOD: Using active anterior rhinomanometry, NAR were measured in eighty two patients who suffered from chronic rhinitis before and postoperation. The subjective impression of their nasal patency was assessed using a 10-pointscale. RESULT: The NAR was (0.665 +/- 0.21) kPa /(s x L) before operation and (0.301 +/- 0.16) kPa/(s x L) three months after operation. The NAR was (0.391 +/- 0.24) ten months after operation. The differences were statistically significant (P < 0.01) between the NAR before and postoperation. There were significant differences in the subjective impression of patients' nasal patency as well (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Plasm radiofrequency at low temperature in treatment of chronic rhinitis is effective in decreasing NAR and improving the subjective impression of their nasal patency.

[Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome: an analysis of treatment in 450 patients].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the most appropriate treatment through comparing surgery, coblator plasma surgery (CPS) and nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP) in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). METHOD: Four hundred and fifty cases were retrospectively analyzed, 368 patients were operated by uvuloplatopharyngoplasty (UPPP), partial excision of root of tongue and/or partial inferior turbinectomy. CPS were performed in 65 patients and 25 cases were accepted the nCPAP. Among them, 17 were the first selection and 8 were the second selection after operation failure. RESULT: The outcomes of near-term (3-6 months) and long-term (1-3 years) in CPAP group are 95.23% and 83.33%, higher than surgery and CPS group. In the near-term result, surgery group is similar to CPS group (86.39% and 78.04%). The long-term effective of surgery group is lower than 50% and become worse with the time passed. And surgery may be accompanied with some dangerous and complications after operation. But the side effect in CPS and nCPAP is very little. CONCLUSION: The treatment of OSAS is developing to safety, simple and acceptable. nCPAP and some simple safely surgery are fitted in serious patients. UPPP, CPS and nCPAP have good effect in light and middle patients. The long-term effect of CPS should still be observed in future.
