[Comparison of serum immunoglobulin levels in patients with alveolar and cystic echinococcosis].

Serum IgG, IgA and IgM levels of 91 patients with alveolar echinococcosis and 83 patients with cystic echinococcosis were compared with 104 healthy adults as controls by single radial immunodiffusion. The mean IgG, IgA and IgM concentrations in patients with alveolar echinococcosis and the mean IgG and IgM levels in patients with cystic echinococcosis were found to be significantly higher than those of the normal controls. The mean IgG, IgA and IgM levels in patients with alveococcosis were 510 +/- 413.06, 389.45 +/- 433.42 and 313.48 +/- 255.19, while those in cystococcosis were 308.36 +/- 339.24, 329.61 +/- 319 and 266.68 +/- 255.68 respectively. The geometric mean of IgG and IgM levels in patients with alveococcosis was 1.67 and 1.25 times that in cystococcosis. 76.9% of alveococcosis patients had IgG levels reaching 200 IU/ml or above, being significantly higher than that in the cystic hydatidosis (50.6%). 93.4% of alveolar echinococcosis cases showed elevated IgM levels up to 100 IU/ml or more, being also significantly higher than that of cystic echinococcosis cases (78.3). Statistically, there was significant correlation between IgG concentration and ELISA antibody titre.

Clinical studies on the antitumor action of mecaphane.

Over a period of 4 years, 241 patients with advanced cancer were treated with mecaphane alone in 11 hospitals. Effective objective responses were obtained in 100 patients (41.4%). The response was most conspicuous in chronic granulocytic leukemia, with remission in 37 of 40 patients; in Hodgkin's disease and lymphosarcoma response rates were 60% and 47.3%, respectively. Mecaphane had an analgesic action in metastatic osteolytic bone cancer, and two patients with such metastases even attained recalcification of the osteolytic destructive lesions. The common toxic manifestations of mecaphane were leukopenia (33.6%), gastrointestinal upsets (28.2%), and thrombocytopenia (12.8%). It is concluded, therefore, that mecaphane could be a good antitumor agent in clinical use. It is less expensive and can be taken orally. Further trials of this drug are recommended.

CT virtual intravascular endoscopy of abdominal aortic aneurysms treated with suprarenal endovascular stent grafting.

BACKGROUND: We investigated the clinical applications of virtual intravascular endoscopy (VIE) in patients with abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) treated by endovascular stent grafting with a suprarenal component. METHODS: Thirty-four patients with AAA undergoing endovascular stent grafting were included in the study (28 male, six female; mean age = 76 years). Helical computed tomography (CT) scanning was performed within 1 week after stent graft implantation. All patients received a Zenith/AAA endovascular graft with uncovered suprarenal struts 2.5 cm long placed around the level of the renal arteries. VIE images were created for each patient. The follow-up periods ranged from 3 to 18 months (mean = 8.3 +/- 3.7 months). RESULTS: Three of 34 celiac arteries, 22 of 34 superior mesenteric arteries, 32 of 34 right renal arteries, and 30 of 35 left renal arteries were affected by the suprarenal stent struts (wires) to different extents. VIE was able to demonstrate the struts, arterial ostia, and the strut/ostia configuration. Follow-up CT showed that all of these aortic branches were patent. CONCLUSION: Our preliminary experience has demonstrated that VIE is a novel imaging technique to visualize the three-dimensional intralumenal relationship of the aortic stent struts to the arterial ostia in patients with AAA after suprarenal stent graft placement.

Body fluid distribution in rats with cold-induced hypertension.

The purpose of this experiment was to determine body fluid distribution during chronic cold exposure and to further understand the mechanism of cold-induced hypertension. Blood pressures, hematocrit, and the plasma, blood, and extracellular fluid volumes were measured in rats at intervals of 1, 3, and 5 weeks after exposure to cold (5 degrees C). Resting systolic, diastolic, and mean blood pressures measured by direct arterial cannula were significantly elevated in a time-dependent manner over the duration of cold exposure. The increase in diastolic blood pressure, which reflects the peripheral vascular resistance, exceeded that of systolic blood pressure after both 3 and 5 weeks of exposure to cold. Pulse pressure was significantly decreased by 3 and 5 weeks of cold exposure. The plasma, blood, and extracellular fluid volumes were significantly increased after both 1 and 3 weeks of exposure to cold, but had returned to control levels by 5 weeks of cold exposure. Cold exposure, however, did not affect the hematocrit. The 2-h water intake after the cold-exposed rats were returned to warm (25 degrees C) (thermogenic drinking) was significantly increased compared to that of warm-acclimated rats during the first, third, and fifth week of exposure to cold. The present results suggest that the development of cold-induced hypertension is associated with blood volume expansion, and that the elevated blood pressure is maintained by increased peripheral vascular resistance without blood volume expansion. The results also imply that exposure to cold induces a dehydration in rats.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm and stent graft phantom manufactured by medical rapid prototyping.

A novel human aorta phantom built by medical rapid prototypingfor use in computed tomography (CT) scanning is described. The phantom contained a stent graft that was deployed internally to mimic a repaired aortic aneurysm. The phantom was produced to allow assessment of the CT appearance of a stent graft inside an aorta using the new virtual intravascular endoscopy image presentation technique. The stent graft utilized contained suprarenal components (metalfixation struts), and these were placed with these struts covering the renal artery ostia. The phantom was filled with iodinated contrast medium at a concentration that produced a density similar to that found in normal CT angiographic scanning. The model was scanned at a variety of slice thicknesses, pitch and image reconstruction intervals. Visualization of the stent suprarenal components in relation to the renal artery ostia is shown and the overestimation of stent wire strut diameter demonstrated.

Characteristics of blood rheology in patients during Novacor left ventricular assist system support.

Blood rheologic properties were studied in 11 patients on Novacor LVAS support (1-126 days) as a bridge to transplantation. Overall, these patients showed slight increases in mean blood viscosity and red cell rigidity. Their mean plasma fibrinogen was in the upper normal range. However, the degree of rheologic change observed, and the individual factors affected most, were unique to each patient and hemorheologic results correlated well with the patient's clinical status.
