[Comparative study of BCG vaccines: Polish, Danish and Japanese].

In a group of 1111 school children aged 12 years from two selected town in Poland (Rzeszów and Ostrołeka) a comparative study of three BCG vaccines was performed, the Polish, the Danish, and the Japanese. Tests for viability of the vaccines gave the following results: for the Polish vaccine 17680000 culturable particles in 1 mg; the Danish--12060000, and the Japanese--43540000 respectively Children eligible for vaccination were selected on the basis of prevaccination tuberculin testing with 2 TU tuberculin RT-23 with Tween 80. All the three vaccines gave high level of postvaccination tuberculin reactions measured after 10 weeks. In more than 30% of children these reactions were higher than 15 mm. The mean postvaccination reactions after the Polish vaccine was 14.2 mm (s.d.3.7), after the Danish--13.7 mm (s.d.3.9), and after the Japanese 14.9 mm(s.d.3.0). The difference between the Danish and the Japanese vaccines was statistically significant, but between the Polish and the other two vaccines was not. It was also formed that children with larger postvaccination tuberculin indurations had larger diameter of preview BCG scars.

[Natural history of pulmonary hypertension in chronic obstructive lung diseases and the usefulness of the simple noninvasive methods of its diagnosis].

In 47 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and 19 patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis pulmonary haemodynamics were studied. Pulmonary arterial pressure was compared with non-invasive lung function tests, ecg and the chest X-ray. Correlations between pulmonary arterial pressure and some of those parameters were found. Investigations were repeated after 3 or 5 years depending on severity of pulmonary hypertension initially found. The progression of pulmonary hypertension was found. It was accompanied by intensification of non-invasive indices of pulmonary hypertension. More than half of patients with initially severe pulmonary hypertension (> or = 30 mmg Hg) did not survive 3 years.

[Cellular analysis of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. I. Detection of macrophage populations].

The aim of the study was to compare the results of routine counts of percentage of BAL macrophages, using morphological differential staining method--Pappenheim stain (M) and staining for nonspecific esterase activity (E) with those obtained by APAAP technique, using specific for monocytes (macrophages monoclonal antibodies (Ki-M1) and the complex APAAP (alkaline phosphatase--mouse anti alkaline phosphatase complex). The mean counts were comparable, although different criteria of estimation were used. Significant differences were seen in smokers when the criteria were based on morphology and expression of surface antigens. The results indicate that correct estimation of macrophage counts and their characteristics (enzymatic activity, expression of surface antigens) can only be made using many methods based on various criteria of estimation.

[Smoking habits, knowledge and attitude of pulmonologists concerning problems of smoking in Poland].

An analysis was carried out on 850 self-report questionnaires sent to Polish pulmonologists on their knowledge and attitude toward smoking. In the sampled population 38% of the males and 29% of females smoked. Smoking was dated as first among various noxious factors in human pathology. The knowledge of harmful effect of smoking was restricted to the cardio-respiratory system. Part of the responders, mainly smokers believe that smoking less than 15 cigarettes is harmless. ++Ex-smokers were most active in smoking cessation programs. Knowledge of harmful effect of smoking and cessation programs by physicians is unsatisfactory and teaching programs concerning this problem is mandatory.

Psychological status of COPD patients on long term oxygen therapy.

We evaluated the psychological status of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients with chronic respiratory failure, who were qualified for or on long-term oxygen therapy. Forty eight patients were examined. The patients' psychological status was assessed by means of the following methods: detailed clinical interview, the Taylor Manifest Anxiety Scale (MAS), Beck's Depression Inventory, and Tylka's Psychological Evaluation of Rehabilitation Efficiency Scale (SOPER). The study demonstrated that the great majority of patients presented a high degree of anxiety, depression and psychological tension, had low self-esteem and did not believe in the efficiency of therapy.
