High-temperature phase of trans-tetraaquabis(trifluoroacetato-O)manganese(II).

The title compound, [Mn(CF(3)COO)(2)(H(2)O)(4)], crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/c. At about 215 K, it undergoes a reversible phase transition, which leads to crystal twinning. The crystal structure of the high-temperature phase was determined at 220 K. The Mn(2+) ion lies on a twofold axis and is octahedrally coordinated by two monodentate trifluoroacetate ligands in apical positions and by four equatorial aqua ligands, two of which lie on the twofold axis. Hydrogen-bonding interactions connect the complex molecules, generating a three-dimensional network.

[Sepsis--generalized infection. The treatment of adults based on personal observations].

Basing on the own experience, the authors discuss causative treatment of sepsis, mainly of unknown etiology. Emphasis is on the depression of immunological system in the acute phase of the disease. Therefore, a combined treatment with 2, often 3 or even 4 bacterial antibiotics is recommended, together with passive immunotherapy, and in certain cases surgical removal of the infection foci.

[Bacterial meningitis in patients with sepsis syndrome].

The authors discuss problems connected with diagnosis, management and treatment of bacterial meningitis among patients with the sepsis syndrome. Considering secondary organ changes bacterial meningitis belongs to the severest one and as a life-threathing sequel of sepsis demands immediate use of proper casual treatment. The authors show the therapeutic difficulties in this group of patients particularly when the etiological organism is unknown. They discuss this problems and present their own schemes of tretment. They indicate the value of passive immunotherapy and surgical removal of the primary source of infection. They emphasize final result depends on secondary organ changes, age, immunity of patient and the kind of etiological agent.

[Analysis of knee arthrotomies performed during 14 years of department activity].

General analysis of 1075 knee arthrotomies in 1037 patients has been carried out. Young, physically active males prevailed 39 per cent of these procedures). In 20 per cent of the cases the injury to the structure other then the meniscus was responsible for the knee malfunction. A major damage to the articular surface has been found in 24 per cent of the cases. In 18 per cent it was associated with meniscal injury, in 6 per cent with the hypertrophied fad pad.

[Tubercular meningitis and encephalitis in adults--own experience].

Diagnostic, clinical and therapeutical problems of tuberculous meningitis and encephalitis have been discussed on a basis of clinical observation of 67 patients. In the early phase of disease the diagnosis is based on clinical parameters and results of cerebrospinal fluid examinations. Authors suggest a shortage of time treatment under 12 months.

[Effect of Bioglobulin on the clinical course of selected diseases of viral and bacterial etiologies].

The therapeutic effect of Bioglobulin was studied in some diseases of viral or bacterial etiology. It was found favorable as it seemed to lessen the clinical and the shorten the acute as well as the hospitalisation periods. Because in the very serious and serious diseases of viral or bacterial etiology the antibodies deficiency, absolute or relative, total or selective is common, Bioglobulin may be a valuable agent in the comprehensive treatment.

[Etiology, clinical course, and the methods and results of the treatment of suppurative meningoencephalitis in adults--personal observations data].

The authors discuss problems connected with the clinical, aetiological diagnosis, methods and results of treatment of purulent meningoencephalitis in adults. The basis for the discussion were own experiences obtained during hospitalization of 578 patients in the period 1981-1990. As a results of this analysis the authors found that the organisms causing this disease most frequently were, as previously, Neisseria meningitidis and anaerobic Haemophilus influenzae were still highly unsatisfactory. Complete recovery was obtained in 73.3% of cases, 6.6% were discharged with various neurological sequelae, and 29.1% died. Cases of pneumococcal origin, frequent after cranial trauma, showed the most severe course, had the highest percent of psychoneurological complications and recurrences with the highest death rate.

[Injury of the acromial end of the clavicle imitating dislocation of the acromio-clavicular joint].

Two patients have been presented: a 15-years-old boy with rupture of the clavicular-coracoid ligaments as in total acromioclavicular dislocation, in whom dislocation of that joint did not occur but acromial epiphysiolysis of the clavicle (this patient, was successfully treated surgically) and 5-years-old boy with strain of the clavicular-coracoid ligaments and fracture of the acromial end of the clavicle; he was treated conservatively with remaining of angular dislocation of the distal fragment. The hope for rebuilding of the axis was fulfilled in that child. The anatomical and functional result in both patients is good.

[Fixation of multi-fragment fracture of the clavicle using an external stabilizer "Zespol"].

After a short presentation of the treatment methods of clavicle shaft fracture and the atypical use of Zespol stabilization in other than union of long bones shaft operation, the treated patient with ++multi-fragment clavicle shaft fracture with indications for operative reposition and fragments osteosynthesis has been presented. The Zespol plate and 4 screws were used above the skin as an external stabilizer for immobilization of the fragments. A good result was achieved: bone union and full mobility of the joints.
