Periodontal status of abutment teeth of conus telescope system was investigated in the production of telescope prosthesis on two and four abutment teeth in Kennedy class I edentulousness. In the first case, abutment teeth of conus telescope system were the first lower premolars, and in the second case the first lower premolars and canines. All investigations were performed on first lower premolars, and included the follow-up of following indexes and parameters: gingival index, periodontal pocket depth, bone resorption index, abutment teeth mobility and dental plaque index. Investigations were performed in two groups of patients: before and after three months and one year after the prosthetic management. The results of clinical investigations revealed the improvement of all investigated parameters three and twelve months later compared to the state prior to the production of telescope prosthesis.
INTRODUCTION: Beside medical, nonmedical factors also influence the quantity and structure of administered drugs. Therefore, it is of importance to analyze these factors and their influence on drug consumption in perinatological hospital practice. The aim of this study was to analyze pharmacotherapeutic practice as well as the influence of nonmedical factors on drug use at the Institute of Perinatology of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Novi Sad. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was of retrospective-prospective character. Analyses comprised drug consumption for the period 1989 and the first 6 months of 1993 and 1994 analyzing data obtained from the hospital pharmacy. Due to lack of drug supply in the hospital pharmacy and domestic market, a sample of 10% patient's histories were taken for analysis in order to compare the above data for the same time interval. All drugs were classified according to the unique ATC (Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical) classification, where the Defined Daily Dose (DDD) was taken as the drug use statistical unit. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: According to the data from the hospital pharmacy, the total drug consumption in 1989 was 7301,85 DDD/BD and in 1993 and 1994 it was significantly decreased (1993--5135,80 DDD/1000 BD vs. 1994--2095,90 DDD/1000 BD). Majority of drugs for all the investigated periods were administered for the group G (urogenital system and sex hormones) out of which most often used drugs were G02A (drugs for stimulation of uterine contractions). According to the patients' history data, drug use was significantly increased in 1993--6322,22 DDD/1000 BD and 1994--3340,01 DDD/1000 BD. The only exception was group A (alimentary tract and metabolism) in which, according to history data, drugs were significantly less frequently prescribed than supplied. The greatest difference in the quantity of prescribed drugs (patients' history data) and the drugs issued from the hospital pharmacy was recorded in the group C (cardiovascular system), G (urogenital system and sex hormones) and H (hormones for systemic use with sex hormones excluded). Prescription of drugs from the groups C and H respectively, according to history data was most probably justified, but a question is raised concerning high rate of drug prescription in group G.
Under the application of clinical electromyography, nowadays is more widely used reflex investigation, i.e., the investigation of the reflexes to the extension. In stomatognathic system is the most frequently applied the investigation of mandibular reflex. Silent period was registered during the investigation of mandibular reflex. Silent period is the reflex pause or the period of suppressive activity that is subsequent to some sort of stimuli during or following muscle contraction. In current dentistry, silent period, registered by electromyography, represents an important parameter in functional diagnosis. The aim of the study was to establish the duration of silent period in masseter muscles during the investigation of mandibular reflex in edentulous patients with the pair of newly made full dentures and in the subjects with natural healthy intact dentition, respectively. The investigation included 20 subjects of average age 44 years. The results of registered silent period during the investigation of mandibular reflex in edentulous patients had the lower values (18.21 ms) than in the subjects with healthy intact dentition and with a pair of newly made full dentures (20.51 ms), respectively, which have confirmed the physiologic time of the duration of silent period.
INTRODUCTION: An international study on drug use in pregnancy (DUP) started in 1987. There were 22 countries involved, among which two centers from Yugoslavia: Novi Sad and Zagreb. The investigation in Novi Sad comprised 296 parturients. On the basis of obtained results, education of physicians-gynecologists has been organized. 10 years later, a check-up study of 100 parturients was introduced in order to find out possible changes in the applied pharmacotherapy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: An investigation on drug use in pregnancy, delivery and puerperium has been performed at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Novi Sad. It included 296 parturients in 1989 (1st investigated period) and 100 parturients in 1999 (2nd investigated period). Results obtained in 1999 were compared with the results from 1989. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Chronic use of drugs was found similar for both investigated periods (2.38% in 1989 vs 5% in 1999). In this group there were no drugs which could endanger the fetus. In 1989, there were 12.6% of pregnant women using preparations such as iron supply, versus 54% in 1999, so that trends in prevention of pharmacotherapy of anemia approached those in developed countries. In the second investigated period there was a significant decrease in progresterone therapy and two times increased use of beta-adrenergic agonists, which is in accordance with new trends in pharmacology. Use of paracetamol decreased, whereas use of metamizole, known by serious side-effects, increased. Drug administration during delivery decreased in 1999 (77%) in relation to 1989 (94.93%) mostly comprising drugs for autonomous nervous system, analgesics and analgoantipyretics. Administration of ergot-alkaloids decreased: from 65.8% in 1989 to 22% in 1999. Use of drugs after delivery can endanger both the parturient and lactation, i.e. nutrition of the newborn infant and consequently the newborn itself. During 1989 practically every parturient (95.27%) was administered drugs, out of which about 97% belonged to the group of ergot-alkaloids which were routinly administered for acceleration of uterine involution. In 1999 ergot-alkaloids were administered only in 9% of delivered women. Use of oxytocins was also reduced because they were administered not routinely but only on purpose. CONCLUSIONS: The following conclusions were made on the basis of obtained data: 1. During the first period there was a difference in drug use when compared to the countries with developed pharmacotherapeutic practice. 2. Use of progesterones was remarkably decreased in 1999 versus two times increased use of beta-adrenergic agonists administered in prevention of spontaneous abortions. 3. Use of opiate analgesics during delivery was significantly reduced from 43% to 11% in 1999. 4. In the second investigated period use of iron preparations was significantly increased versus decreased use of ergot-alkaloids. 5. Use of paracetamol decreased, whereas use of metamizole (known by serious side-effects) increased.

Adductor muscles muscular tone of new complete denture wearers in the period of initial functional adaptation was investigated as well as the use of visual feedback with EMG method for more efficient use of dentures. Thirteen persons of 63 years average were investigated. Action potential of masseter muscle surface layers and pterigoid muscles anterior layers on both sides were registered. Subjects were instructed how to adjust the mandible from the rest position to the full contact with upper denture teeth and to keep it that way for 5 minutes, 3 times a day. Intensity of measured muscle activity was controlled immediately after denture insertion as well as 7, 14 and 21 days after insertion. The greatest amplitude values of all of four examined muscles were registered after denture insertion. Expected changes due to the use of visual feedback had favorable effect on muscular tone lowering during the following period. Maximal therapeutic tone was reestablished.
The microbiological status and disinfecting effect of Vikopres zinc-oxide eugenol paste was investigated after the functional impression was taken. The examinees were persons with edentulous maxilla (n = 32). The silicon paste of similar viscosity applied in the same persons was used as the control. The samples for microbiological tests were taken immediately, 30 minutes later and 3 hours after the impression was made. Significantly less samples with positive bacteriological findings were found on Vikopres paste, compared to the control one.
Silent period is reflex pause or period suppressed activity after some kind of simulation during or after muscular contraction. In dentistry electromyographically registered silent period has important place as method of functional diagnosis. The aim of this investigation was to establish duration of silent period in both masseter muscles of persons with complete dentures in normal increased and decreased occlusal vertical dimensions. Subjects of investigation were 4 men and 4 women, average of 65 years. Occlusal vertical dimensions were established electromyographically. For every subject tree sets of complete dentures were made: with normal, increased and decreased occlusal vertical dimension for 4 mm. Silent period was registered by "Medlec" Mystro-MS 20 apparatus with intramuscular leads. The differences of silent period duration were registered among all three vertical dimensions, especially between and increased occlusal vertical dimensions.

There is a constant dilemma of dental practitioners in contact with patients in whom complete dentures have lost congruent relation toward supporting mucoosseous tegmen if new dentures should be made or rebased by change of denture base. The investigators who have studied those problems have been mostly concerned with problem of material and rebasing procedures of complete dentures. The aim of the study was to determine the functional value of unrebased, rebased by Rehm and new complete dentures and compare the time of initial functional adaptation of patients to rebased and new complete dentures. The study included 72 examinees. The functional value of complete dentures was estimated by test of masticatory muscles, bioelectrical activity by test of masticatory efficacy and by test of maximal physiological load. On the basis of the study it was concluded that complete dentures rebased by Rehm were in function worthier than unrebased, and the period of initial functional adaptation was missing. In the examinees with pair of newly made complete dentures, functional tests revealed the reduction of initial values after the new dentures were delivered. During the examination interval, progressive dynamics with tendency of establishing the optimal functional value and initial functional adaptation was revealed after 21 days.
