[Change of cell proliferation after the denervation laryngeal adducent muscles in dogs].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the changes of cell proliferation state after denervation of laryngeal adducent muscles in dog. METHODS: The muscles were obtained from 8 dogs with recurrent lanyrgeal nerves injured. The cross sectional areas of muscle cells were measured by VIDS Image Analysis System in HE stained sections. A quantitative collagen/muscle ratio was measured by TJTY-300 image analysis system in Van Gieson stained sections. The percentages of S phase cell nucleus were calculated by image cytometry/DNA quantitative analysis with CAS 200 System. RESULTS: It showed that the cross sectional area of muscle cells decreased gradually after denervation (out-standing in 6 months after denervation) and collagen/muscle ratio increased significantly with time. The percentage of S phase nucleus was high at 5 months and then decreased. CONCLUSION: The proliferation of thyroarytenoid muscle and lateral cricoarytenoid muscle cell of dog remained at high level in 5 months after denervation and then slowed down and atrophy of muscles occurred 6 months after denervation. This suggests that nerve repair should be performed early. Examination of cell proliferation might indicate if the denervation of cells irreversible. It is helpful in choosing proper surgery and estimating the effect of nerve repair.

Machine vision monitoring of plant growth and motion.

The tomato plant was used as a model to study growth and movement due to temperature changes in the environment. A morphological feature, plant top projection canopy area (TPCA), was used to characterize the plant growth and movement. Three temperature regimes (normal temperature, low temperature, and a step change from normal to low temperature) were used for the study. It is found that the plants have significant cyclic canopy movement. In addition, both plant growth, which is represented by canopy expansion, and canopy movement are affected by air temperature. The response of the plant to a step change of air temperature was also documented.

[A research on chemical dynamic changes and drug efficacy of SMS compound prescription: chemical researches on shenmaisan prescription (I)].

To clarify the material base of the distinct curative effect of Shengmaisan (SMS) compound prescription, a study was made on the dynamics of chemical constituents in the decoction prepared according to the compound prescription. From the decoction a new compound was isolated and identified by UV, IR, MS and NMR as 5-hydroxymethy-2-furaldehyde (5-HMF). The study suggests that the distinct curative effect of SMS compound prescription hinges on a material base which is different chemically from that in the other three single drugs used separately, thus presenting scientific criteria for rational compatibility and quality check in making preparations on compound prescriptions.

[Metabolism in Arctium lappa L. at the primary stage of germination].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the metabolic changes of the seeds at the primary stage of germination in Arctium lappa. METHOD: By means of electrophoresis the changes of peroxidases and soluble proteins were assayed at the primary stage of germination. RESULTS: The color of some original bands was enhanced, some original bands disappeared, and some new bands were detected in peroxidase patterns during the germinating process. The color changes were the main expression in soluble protein patterns. The bands of soluble proteins changed most obviously at 96 h and 120 h after germination. CONCLUSION: It follows that the metabolic process in the seeds of Arctium lappa at the stage of germination is complex and 96 h and 120 h after germination are the key times of metabolism.

[Recurrent pheochromocytoma].

OBJECTIVE: To improve the diagnosis of recurrent pheochromocytoma. METHODS: To study 11 cases of recurrent pheochromocytoma treated from 1970 to 1996. RESULTS: The recurrence was due to the metastasis of malignant tumor and the multifocal occurrence of benign one. Extraadrenal pheochromocytomas tended to occur at several sites or metastasize. The metastatic places usually no show pheochromatic tissues, and the recurrent benign tumors were liable to grow at extraadrenal regions. The nature of recurrent tumors should be judged according to variant factors. CONCLUSION: The recurrent pheochromocytomas are not malignant in nature, but they have considerable malignant tendency and should undergo intensive survelliance and regular examinations especially for the primary or recurrent extraadrenal pheochromocytomas.

[Protease inhibitory activities of nasal secretion on house dust mite allergen].

OBJECTIVE: To elucidate the interaction of protease inhibitors and house dust mite allergen in vitro. METHODS: Nasal secretion was collected by suction from patients with house dust mite nasal allergy, diluted immediately with PBS pH 7.0, mixed with vortex for 10 minutes, and then centrifuged at 2,000 g for 10 minutes. The supernatant was kept at -80 degrees C for use. Synthetic low molecular weight fluorogenic peptide substrates were applied to evaluate protease activities. Crude mite extract and other proteases were used, each of them was preincubated in the presence or absence of nasal fluid or other protease inhibitors at 37 degrees C for 30 minutes. The intensity of fluorescence of aminomethylcoumarin released from the cleaved substrate was measured. RESULTS: Nasal fluid exhibited mild trypsin-like and other protease activities. It inhibited the activities of trypsin and trypsin-like serine proteases and papain-like cysteine proteases in crude mite extract in a dose-dependent manner. CONCLUSIONS: Nasal fluid possibly plays a role in inhibiting penetration of allergen into the nasal mucosa by producing protease inhibitor-protease complex in the nasal mucus layer of patients with mite allergy.

[Prevention and management of chylous fistula after neck dissection].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of treatment for chylous fistulas after neck dissection, as a means of reasonable option of therapeutic measures. METHODS: Of 37 chylous fistulas, 30 were left-sided and 7 were right-sided. Conservative therapy which included closed-wound drainage and local pressure dressing and/or low-fat nutritional support was employed in 26 cases, and 50% glucose was injected into the neck basic wound bed in 2 cases, to promoto the chylous fistula healing up. Operative ligation was performed in 7 cases. Open-wound and packing in 4 cases. RESULTS: Eighty-six percent chylous fistula occured from 1 to 3 postoperative days. Of 26 chylous fistulas with conservative management, 15 cases were successfully treated, the mean duration for healing was 9.7 (4-30) days, the remaining 11 cases failed to had and were further treated surgically. Seven cases with operative ligation were successful, and the other 4 cases with open-wound and packing had delayed healing, the mean duration was 8.5 (7-10) days. CONCLUSION: The majority of patients with chylous fistulas could be treated reasonablly without increasing the hospital days. The conservative therapy should be employed in cases with a maximal production of chyle below 500 ml a day. Operative ligation should be done early in cases with a maximal production exceeding 500 ml a day and with conservative treatment failure for a few days. The open-wound and packing should be used in chylous fistulas persisting for more then 7 days.

[The pathogenesis of infection complicated by acute necrotizing pancreatitis: an experimental study].

OBJECTIVE: To observe the injury of gut barrier function and intestinal bacterial translocation following acute necrotizing pancreatitis (ANP), and to investigate the pathogenesis of infection complicated by ANP. METHOD: Fifteen dogs were colonized with a strain of E. coli JM109 bearing ampicillin-resistant plasmid PUC18, then divided into two groups: control group (n = 7) and ANP group (n = 8). Acute necrotizing pancreatitis was induced by injection of sodium taurocholate and trypsin into the pancreatic duct. RESULT: In the ANP group, as compared with the control group, serum amylase level increased significantly, the lactulose/mannitol ratio was 2-12 times higher, blood and ileum diamine oxidase activity decreased significantly. E. coli population in intestinal mucosal flora increased, while bifidobacterium and lactobacillus reduced significantly. Bifidobacterium/E. coli ratio was reversed. Morphological study revealed areas of hemorrhage and necrosis in the pancreas and shedding of ileal villi. In the control group, blood cultures were negative, and no organism was found in organs except for mesenteric lymph nodes in two dogs. In the ANP group, blood and organ cultures were positive in all dogs and JM109 could be found uniformly too. CONCLUSION: ANP impaired the gut barrier function, which led to bacterial translocation from the gut to the pancreas and other organs, serving as a primary source of infection secondary to ANP.

[The distribution of nerve endings in the human cervical nerve roots].

OBJECTIVE: To find out the distribution of nerve endings in the dural sheath of cervical nerve roots and to study the mechanism of cervical radicular pain. METHOD: 2069 20 microm serial sections were made from 39 cervical root-dorsal root ganglion specimens obtained from 18 postmortems. By using optical microscope and Suzuki silver impregnation method and Klüver-Brrera method, we examined the morphology, quantity and distribution of the nerve ending in the nerve sheath of the root, dorsal root ganglion (DRG) and the spinal nerve of these sections. RESULT: There were several kinds of nerve endings such as free nerve endings in the nerve sheath of the root, the dorsal root ganglion, and the spinal nerve. Free nerve endings were distributed in the proximal and distal portions of DRG sheath more extensive than that in other parts of the dural root-sheaths. CONCLUSION: The free nerve endings in the dural root-sheaths especially those in the DRG sheath are thought to play an important role in cervical radicular pain.
