Anaesthesia in Hong Kong and the Faculty of Anaesthetists: 25 years of co-operation.

The development of anaesthetic services in Hong Kong started about five years after the Faculty of Anaesthetists, RACS, was founded. A nucleus of trained anaesthetists there sought assistance from the Faculty to establish adequate training posts and courses of instruction, and hence to provide consultants with an internationally accepted qualification. This paper describes the major features of the early decades of this development.

Recovery of malignant tumor cells from the right atrium during hepatic resection for hepatocellular carcinoma.

Tumor cells were recovered from the right atrium in three of five patients during hepatic resection for hepatocellular carcinoma. Mechanical factors during blunt mobilization and rotation of the hepatic tumor appeared to be responsible for tumor dislodgement into the venous circulation. Tumor embolization to the lungs may be one of the important reasons for the poor results of surgery in this disease. Two possible technical and therapeutic modifications are suggested to prevent or neutralize this phenomenon.

Anaesthesia in Hong Kong. Its history and present position.

The history of the development of the specialty of anaesthesia in Hong Kong, its present position and future prospects are discussed. Special reference is made to the activities of the Society of Anaesthetists in Hong Kong which has promoted the cause of anaesthesia and maintained extensive international links during the last 25 years.

Anesthesia for tracheal stenosis, tracheoesophageal fistula and status asthmaticus.

A 26-year-old female patient who, in addition to tracheal stenosis, also suffered from status asthmaticus and an esophagotracheal fistula, underwent surgery for resection of the stenosed segment, reconstruction of tracheal continuity and fistula repair. The therapy for her asthma and the anesthetic management for bronchoscopy and, later, definitive surgery are described. Radiological photographs (before and after surgery) as well as results of respiratory function tests are shown.
