Activation of the primary motor cortex by somatosensory stimulation in adult rats is mediated mainly by associational connections from the somatosensory cortex.

In anaesthetized adult rats, facial nerve injury causes a disinhibition of the interhemispheric connections between homotopic representation fields in the primary motor cortex with a latency of 4 min (Toldi et al., 1996, Neurosci Lett. 203, 179-182). One possible explanation for the induction of such rapid changes is an alteration of the somatosensory input to the motor cortex. To test this hypothesis, unit activity in primary motor cortex was recorded during electrical stimulation of trigeminal afferents in the contralateral whisker-pad. About one-third of all recorded primary motor cortex neurons responded with latencies shorter than in the ventrolateral and posterior nuclei of the thalamus. Responses failed at stimulation frequencies > or = 10 Hz and after elimination or inactivation of the somatosensory cortex. Within primary motor cortex, the activatable neurons displayed a bilaminar distribution and were identified as pyramidal neurons by neurobiotin labelling. The results suggest that trigeminal afferents participate in modulation of the activity of primary motor cortex output neurons via primary somatosensory cortex-to-primary motor cortex associational connections, even under anaesthesia.

[Medical informatics and health care in Subotica yesterday, today and tomorrow].

The application of information systems in health care throughout the world has begun ten years after the first generation of computers. Computers are a tool for doing business in all segments of health care. After a presentation of the development of informatics in the world and in our surroundings, a survey of events related to the health-care informatics in Subotica is given, as well as the perspective which is expected.

Dihydroxyacetone reductase from Mucor javanicus. 1. Isolation and properties.

An NADPH-dependent oxidoreductase has been extracted from the mycelium of the fungus Mucor Javanicus (Wehmer) and enriched 1000-fold with respect to the protein contained in the crude extract after centrifugation at 2600 X g. The molecular weight of the enzyme was estimated by gel filtration to be about 100 000; electrophoresis under dissociating conditions indicates four subunits of molecular weight about 28 000. Data on stability and activity of the enzyme as a function of pH and temperature are reported. From a kinetic study and product analysis of the reduction of the two enantiomeric trans-1-decalones and also from a kinetic study of the oxidation of the two diastereomeric pairs of trans-1-decalols it follows that the enzymes is an e-Si oxidoreductase (according to the nomenclature proposed by Dutler et al., Eur. J. Biochem. 22 [1971]203-212 and Prelog and Helmchen, Helv. Chim. Acta, 55 [1972] 2581-2598). This classification is amply confirmed by the kinetic behaviour of a large number of alicyclic substrates. Using (4-2HSi-labelled coenzyme to reduce (9S)-trans-1,4-decalindione, it was shown that the enzyme is HSi (= HS = HB)-stereospecific with respect to the coenzyme. It is demonstrated that the oxidoreductase from Mucor javanicus can be used for the preparation of optically pure chiral alcohols and ketones. In the following paper evidence is presented that the natural substrate of the enzyme is dihydroxyacetone.
