Four indices have been tested for quantitative description of the form of the expiratory partial pressure carbon dioxide curves within a group of 80 male smokers with normal routine spirometry. The control group consisted of 60 healthy nonsmokers whose age and residence matched those of the smokers. The tests demonstrated statistically significant differences between smokers and the control group. Gamma angle index and planimetric index displayed high sensitivity to the quantitative description of the capnographic curves, whereas the concomitant cough and sputum production or the smoking index did not. The data produced show that capnographic indices provide valuable data on ventilation-perfusion ratio dysfunction and also, indirectly, on small airways on smokers with normal conventional spirometry.
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The atherosclerotic arterial injuries lead to many life threatening vascular incidents. It has been well documented that inflammatory processes play an important role in atherogenesis. Intensive studies are undertaken to find a serum marker of inflammatory reaction correlated with arterial injuries. METHODS: In our study we measured the level of interleukin-6 (IL-6) in patients with dyslipidemia IIa and IIb biochemically confirmed. Control estimations were done in age-matched group. Arterial injuries were evaluated as a thickening of complex intima-media in common carotid arteries by means of Doppler ultrasonography. RESULTS: Levels of IL-6 were significantly higher in both groups of patients with dyslipidemia as compared with the healthy control persons (IIa vs control p<0.001, IIb vs control p<0.001). The plasma level of IL-6 is significantly correlated to intima-media complex thickness (r=0.68, p<0.0001). CONCLUSION: We conclude that increase of serum concentration of IL-6 may be related to arterial wall injuries in the course of the most atherogenic lipid disorders.
A group of 50 healthy volunteers underwent the measurement of blood flow in the protal vein and in the splenic vein by means of the Acuson 128 sector ultrasound probe 3.5 MHz connected with the Doppler pulsation wave. The authors strictly obeyed the principle on directing the ultrasound beam at the vessel examined at an angle not larger than 25 degrees. The frequency spectrum obtained was used for calculating the medium speed of flow, and the diameter of the vessel found in the tw-dimension picture was used to calculate the surface of the cross section of a vessel. The blood flow was calculated by multiplying the medium flow speed by the surface of the cross-section of a vessel. The flow in the portal vein amounted to 853 +/- 130 ml/min., and the flow in the splenic vein amounted to 327 +/- 141 ml/min. The flow in the portal vein was best correlated with the body mass, and the flow in the splenic vein with the volume of the spleen.
