[Comparative evaluation of health hazards associated with industrial chemicals and their derivates forming during water chlorination].

Many industrial chemicals found in waste waters are able to form organochlorine by-products during water disinfection. The transformation of seven model compounds, cyclohexene, n-butanol, diphenylmethane, acetophenone, aniline, 1-methylnaphthalene, and phenylxylylethane during a reaction with active chlorine was studied. Aqueous chlorine and sodium hypochlorite were used as chlorinating agents. The products of the reaction were analyzed by means of chromatomass-spectrometry. A schematic model of diphenylmethane transformation was proposed. Comparative evaluation of hazards associated with the model chemicals and their derivates confirmed that chlorination products can be more toxic and dangerous than the initial compounds, and may possess mutagenic and cancerigenic properties.

[The criteria of threshold effects of environmental pollutants].

A set of criteria, indices and methods applicable to determining the threshold doses and concentrations of chemical substances was critically examined, analyzed and summarized. A differentiated notion for the hazard effect threshold and for threshold effects, with due respect for which the daily doses and norms are substantiated for various environmental objects, is described. An original interpretation of the hygienic evaluation of an enhanced enzyme activity, mainly of the microsomal hepatic enzymes, is suggested; it is noteworthy, that this aspect was often regarded as a physiological response to the detoxication of chemicals. An advantage of calculating the reference doses as compared to other mathematical methods of determining the threshold values is demonstrated. The article is intended to promote and enhance the safety of hygienic regulation, which is a basis for the state environmental monitoring.

Mutagenic activity of cyclohexene and products of its chlorination.

Cyclohexene exhibits no mutagenic effect in the Ames test. Products of its transformation (chlorination) produced a mutagenic effect in the Ames test on TA 100 strain without metabolic activation and in the micronucleus test on epithelial cells from mouse urinary bladder and colon. These findings are consistent with epidemiological data on higher incidence of urinary bladder and rectal cancers in subjects consuming chlorinated drinking water from surface water reservoirs.

[Theoretical rationale for structure-genotoxicity relationships in the series of halogenated short-chain aliphatic compounds for mammals and bacteria].

Structure-genotoxicity relationships for mammals and structure-mutagenic activity relationships for bacterial were derived in the series of halogenated short-chain hydrocarbons and alcohols, by using the calculated quantum chemical parameters, namely the energy differences of frontier molecular orbitals and the electronic characteristics of the probable metabolites.

[Development and analysis of mathematical models of the relationship "water pollution--health of the population"].

Hygienic aspects of building and analysis of mathematical models of the relationship water chemical stress--health of the population are presented in the article. The developed methodological approaches are approved at the example of two water objects--sources of centralized water supply of a big industrial city in the West Urals. The proposed methods of mathematical modelling make it possible to significantly broaden and deepen hygienic analysis and tasks for the development of further studies in the field of investigation of health effects of actual body burden of pollutants.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)
