Ultrasound guided spleen biopsy in chimpanzees (pan troglodytes).

To the best of our knowledge, this is the first published investigation of the size and position of chimpanzee spleens as measured by ultrasound, and that a fine-needle biopsy of the chimpanzee spleen, guided by ultrasound, has been performed. In general, the chimpanzee spleen is smaller than the human spleen (mean length of 8.9 cm, SD 1.17 cm; mean thickness 2.4 cm, SD 0.35 cm; n = 14) and its position may be different due to different numbers of thoracic vertebrae. Fine-needle biopsy is a safe and simple method to obtain lymphoid tissue sufficient for PCR testing of HIV-1.

Advantage of transvaginal over transabdominal sonography.

Results with transvaginal sonography (TVS), a new ultrasound diagnostic method, are reported. A total of 40 patients were comparatively examined by transvaginal and transabdominal sonography. In contrast to transabdominal sonography, the transvaginal examination provided additional information in 35% of the patients. The indications and advantages of transvaginal sonography are summarized as compared with the traditional method. The introduction of the method is recommended in all US laboratories where examinations of the pelvis are performed.

Sonographic scan of the normal and pathological endometrium.

The cycle-dependent sonographic signs of the endometrium in healthy women, the morphological picture of the endometrium in the menopause as well as in tumorous changes are reviewed. The importance of sonography is pointed out in screening the pathological changes of the endometrium. The examination of the endometrium may provide useful supplementary data also to treating infertile patients. Transvaginal sonography may essentially enhance the precision of the method.

[Transvaginal ultrasonic studies].

The authors report their results obtained by the use of a new sonographic technique, transvaginal sonography. Transvaginal sonograms were compared with conventional transabdominal scans in 40 patients. In 35 per cent of cases the quality of the transvaginal image was found to be superior compared to that of the transabdominal image. The authors summarize the indications of transvaginal sonography and its advantages in comparison with conventional method. They recommend this new technique for the examination of pelvis in women in any ultrasound laboratories.

[Comparison of transabdominal and intrarectal ultrasonic studies in prostatic diseases].

Following a great number of transabdominal and intrarectal ultrasonographies the authors analyse the significance of the method int the diagnostics of the prostatic diseases. The technique and conditions of the performance of both examinations are described. The ultrasonic signs of different prostatic diseases are discussed in details and the value of intrarectal ultrasonography in the recognition and diagnostics of the prostatic cancer is analysed. The attention is drawn to the fact that the data of ultrasonography alone are not sufficient for making the correct diagnosis, results of the traditional diagnostic techniques (manual examination, cytology, histology, cystoscopy) must also be taken into consideration.

Duplex ultrasonography in portal vein thrombosis.

Duplex ultrasonography (US) was performed in 23 patients with portal vein thrombosis. In 7 children and 16 adults, duplex US demonstrated intraluminal thrombi (4 cases), thrombus and periportal collaterals (2 cases), and cavernomatous transformation of the portal vein (17 cases). Real-time US is a suitable means of demonstrating the anatomy of the portal venous system; pulsed Doppler provided information on the patency and direction of portal flow. In a few cases, Doppler color flow imaging was used, which was helpful in the examination of branches of the portal vein and the superior mesenteric and splenic veins. Portal duplex US is suggested in selected groups of patients before surgery to demonstrate the presence or absence of portal vein thrombosis.

New possibilities of recognizing early endometrial changes.

Ultrasonographic examinations completed by electron microscopic study were made with transvaginal head in 15 cases. According to the authors, the combined use of these two methods can improve the chances of detecting and recognizing early hyperplasia, preblastoses as well as endometrial tumours.
