The acute vitreous haemorrhage.

One hundred cases of acute vitreous haemorrhage have been analysed prospectively. It was possible to identify the cause of the haemorrhage at presentation in 79% of the cases. 40% were due to retinal tears and only 6% were associated with diabetic retinopathy.

Senile macular changes in the black African.

One thousand black African and 380 white Caucasian patients over the age of 50 were examined for evidence of age-related macular changes, namely, drusen, pigment epithelial atrophy, and disciform macular degeneration. Drusen and pigment epithelial changes were found to occur twice as commonly in Caucasians as in Africans; there was a much greater difference in the prevalence of disciform macular degeneration between the 2 groups. The cause of the differences remains unexplained.

The perifoveal vasculature in albinism.

The perifoveal vasculature was studied in a series of patients with oculocutaneous tyrosinase-positive albinism. Fluorescein angiographic studies show a normal distribution of the major retinal blood vessels and in some cases of the capillaries in the macular area of these patients.

Senile disciform macular degeneration in the second eye.

Development of senile disciform degeneration in the second eye was studied in a group of 104 patients over a period of up to five years. 12 to 15% of these patients develop disciform degeneration in the other eye each year. Patients with large and confluent drusen, especially if combined with accumulation of dye on fluorescein angiogram, were at greatest risk of developing disciform degeneration in the second eye.

Comparative studies on orthotopic liver allotransplantation in pigs after intoxication with extracts from amanita phalloides and after a long-term preservation of transplants.

The paper deals with results obtained in two experimental groups of pigs after orthotopic liver allotransplantation. The first group involved recipients intoxicated with a lethal dose of extracts from Amanita phalloides before the transplantation. The other was not given toxins from Amanita phalloides; the transplanted livers, however, were preserved for a long time. The authors briefly describe the surgical procedure, method of liver preservation and application of toxins from Amanita phalloides. Results of orthotopic allotransplantations are discussed with regard to the survival period, death causes, clinical findings, and some biochemical values.
