[Clinical assessment of treatment results for atherosclerotic ischemia of the lower extremities with intraarterial ozone injections].

Ten injections of O3 into femoral arteries were administered to 50 patients with atherosclerotic ischemia of the lower extremities and to 49 diabetic patients. All patients were assessed clinically with the ankle-arm index, measurement of intermittent claudication distance prior to and after the treatment. The treatment showed a significant improvement in both groups manifested by an increase in ankle-arm index, and prolongation of the intermittent claudication distance by more than twice. The treatment of atherosclerotic ischemia of the lower extremities with O3 is both valuable and safe.

[Mathematical analysis of relations between dose, level or volume of bupivacaine and various hemodynamic parameters in epidural anesthesia].

Changes in the basic, hemodynamic parameters during the first 30 minutes of epidural anesthesia in relation of the dose, concentration, and volume of bupivacaine used are discussed. It was found, that in a proper epidural anesthesia a significant effect on the value of basic hemodynamic parameters was exerted only by a volume of administered bupivacaine solution, whereas its concentration or dose do not play any significant role. However, further prospective studies are necessary to extend this observation on the wider population.

[Preliminary report on using therapeutic ozone in infectious conjunctivitis and keratitis and in corneal degeneration].

The preliminary report presents the results of application of ozone preparation in form of ophthalmic drops in 89 patients (134 eyes). This preparation has been used in virus conjunctival and corneal diseases as well as in corneal degenerations after inflammatory conditions and chemical burns. One observed as acceleration of the regeneration processes in active inflammatory conditions of the anterior eye segment; instead the cases of leucoma and corneal opacities did not show any clinical effect.

[Preliminary report on using general ozone therapy in diseases of the posterior segment of the eye].

Autotransfusion of ozone venous blood was performed in 174 patients, in 32 patients ozone was given intraarterially. General ++ozone therapy was used for the first time in Poland in the following ophthalmological conditions: retinal pigment dystrophy, glaucomatous optic atrophy, in optic neuritis, after injuries and in cases of unknown aetiology; in degenerative-atrophic changes of the choroid, in high myopia, in post-inflammatory cases, in other degenerative diseases and in bacterial corneal ulcerations. Ozone therapy in these conditions seems to be favourable especially when the pathological process is not extensive. One could observe an improvement of the visual acuity and of the visual field.

[Some hemostatic parameters after treatment with ozone in a group of patients with obliterative atherosclerosis of the lower extremities and in a group of patients with diabetes].

Basic hemostasis and fibrinolysis parameters have been analysed in the group of 35 patients with obliterative atherosclerosis and in 41 patients with diabetes mellitus treated with intra-arterial ozone in concentration of O2/O3 54 micrograms/cm3 O3. Assayed parameters were within normal values. However, a tendency to decreased blood coagulation following ozone therapy was more pronounced in patients with obliterative atheromatosis, than in these with diabetes mellitus.

[Ozone therapy and viscosity of blood and plasma, distance of intermittent claudication and certain biochemical plasma components in patients with occlusive arteriosclerosis of the lower limbs].

Blood and plasma viscosity, total lipids, triglycerides, total cholesterol, free fatty acids, fibrinogen, lipid-gram, and hematocrit were determined in 53 patients with occlusive arteriosclerosis in the lower limbs prior to and after ozone therapy. At the same time the distance of the intermittent claudication was measured. A significant prolongation of the distance walked painlessly, reduction in blood and plasma viscosity as well as the decrease in total cholesterol after therapy with ozone correlated with a decrease of the blood viscosity.

[Ozone therapy and viscosity of blood and plasma, distance of intermittent claudication and certain biochemical components in patients with diabetes type II and ischemia of the lower extremities].

Blood and plasma viscosity, total blood lipids, triglycerides, total cholesterol, free fatty acids, fibrinogen, hematocrit, and lipidogram were determined in patients with diabetes mellitus type II and coexisting symptoms of the obliterative arteriosclerosis of the lower limbs. Intermittent claudication distance has been measured parallel. The same tests have been carried out after ozone therapy. A significant improvement in the intermittent claudication and reduction in blood and plasma viscosity have been noted. There was statistically significant correlation between intermittent claudication decrease and blood viscosity reduction following ozone therapy.

[Various parameters of lipid metabolism after intra-arterial injections of ozone in patients with ischemia of the lower extremities and diabetes mellitus].

In 50 subjects with arteriosclerotic ischaemia of the lower extremities and 41 subjects with diabetes mellitus ozone was applied intra-arterially. Before and after the treatment serum lipids concentration was examined. In the group with arteriosclerotic ischemia significant decrease in cholesterol level and both his fractions was seen. Whereas in the group with diabetes the cholesterol LDL was significantly reduced. In both groups total lipids level serum was decreased. It suggests that ++ozone therapy set back the arteriosclerosis progress, normalized some parameters of lipid metabolism and improved HDL to LDL cholesterol fractions relationship.

[Treatment of Guillain-Barré syndrome by the method of fractionated plasma exchange with controlled hemodilution].

Plasma exchange under controlled haemodilution was tried in 9 patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome repeating the procedure at 24-hour intervals for from 7 to 17 times with a total exchange of plasma ranging from 2.0 to 4.9 litres. All patients had significant paresis or paralysis of all four extremities, and 3 had additionally respiratory failure. The criteria accepted for performing plasmapheresis included a very severe form of the disease and a steady progression of signs despite treatment with corticosteroids. Already after the first exchange of plasma arrest of disease progression was observed in all cases, and after the 2nd or 3rd exchange a progressing improvement began. Six patients regained the ability of walking within 4 to 8 weeks, all were discharged walking unaided. The obtained results suggest the conclusion that the therapeutic method used is a very effective way of treating severe cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome and should be used in these patients.

Ozonotherapy.

The medical use of ozone intraarterially, subcutaneously, intramuscularly and externally and in autohaemotransfusion or as a gas introduced into body cavities, as well as drops, compresses or liquids for rinsing etc. brings about very good therapeutic results. Ozone exerts a positive effect on oxygen and nutrient supply of cells, it enhances immunological processes, inhibits inflammatory processes, has a bacterio-, fungi- and virusostatic action when there is impaired resistance to microorganisms, improves rheological properties of the blood and exhibits no side effects in patients. Consequently ozonotherapy may be regarded asan effective method of treatment.
