A cost-effective line-based light-balancing technique using adaptive processing.

The camera imaging system has been widely used; however, the displaying image appears to have an unequal light distribution. This paper presents novel light-balancing techniques to compensate uneven illumination based on adaptive signal processing. For text image processing, first, we estimate the background level and then process each pixel with nonuniform gain. This algorithm can balance the light distribution while keeping a high contrast in the image. For graph image processing, the adaptive section control using piecewise nonlinear gain is proposed to equalize the histogram. Simulations show that the performance of light balance is better than the other methods. Moreover, we employ line-based processing to efficiently reduce the memory requirement and the computational cost to make it applicable in real-time systems.

Behavior, attitudes and knowledge about antibiotic usage among residents of Changhua, Taiwan.

This study surveyed the behavior, attitudes, and knowledge about antibiotic usage among residents of Changhua County, Taiwan. A questionnaire designed to evaluate general knowledge and attitudes towards antibiotic usage was administered to a total of 1024 adults. The male-to-female ratio was 0.75. All of the 1024 adults were aware of the term "antibiotics". Only 39.2% of subjects had knowledge about basic antibiotic terminology, 69.7% expected that physicians should educate people about antibiotics. There were 7 main findings of this study: (1) 52.7% of subjects considered that physicians advice about the need for compliance was poor; (2) 15.3% of subjects always requested an antibiotics prescription when they suffered from flu-like symptoms; (3) 49.8% failed to comply with prescribed antibiotic regimens; (4) 53.1% of subjects were not aware that antibiotic syrup should be stored in the refrigerator; (5) 27.1% of subjects lacked knowledge about how to deal with the misuse of antibiotics; (6) 9.3% of pregnant and breast-feeding subjects did not have adequate knowledge of the safety of using antibiotics during pregnancy; and (7) 30% of subjects did not know how to obtain information about antibiotic usage. Residents of Changhua County had inadequate or incorrect knowledge about antibiotic usage. The findings of this study imply the need for programs to promote greater education about antibiotics usage in the general population of Taiwan.

Amphiphilic properties of poly(oxyalkylene)amine-intercalated smectite aluminosilicates.

Layered aluminosilicates, including synthetic fluorine mica and natural montmorillonite (MMT), were intercalated with poly(oxypropylene)-polyamine quaternary salts with a 230-5000 molecular weight range. The X-ray basal spacing of these silicates had been expanded from 13.5 to 83.7 A for the synthetic mica and to 92.0 A for MMT. The relative silicate dimensions (300-1000 nm for synthetic mica and 80-100 nm for MMT) were ascertained by direct TEM observations in the case of the co-intercalated synthetic mica and MMT mixtures with Mw = 2000 quaternary ammonium salts. The tailored organic incorporation of synthetic mica and MMT clays could alter these hydrophilic clays, making them amphiphilic, and enable the lowering of toluene/water interfacial tension to 2.0 mN/m at the critical concentration of 0.1 wt %.
