Peripheral neuropathy in lentivirus infection: evidence of inflammation and axonal injury.

OBJECTIVE: As distal sensory polyneuropathy (DSP) is a major neurological complication of HIV-1 infection, we investigated the extent of peripheral nervous system disease in animals infected with the lentivirus, feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), because it causes neurological disease and immunosuppression in cats similar to HIV-1 in humans. METHODS: After infection with a neurovirulent FIV molecular clone, neurobehavioral testing, nerve morphology, viral detection and load measurements were performed. RESULTS: Neurobehavioral studies showed delayed withdrawal in response to a noxious stimulus among FIV-infected animals compared with sham-infected controls (P < 0.05). Dorsal root ganglia and sciatic nerves from FIV-infected ammals showed activated macrophages that were increased in number and size compared with controls. In addition, TNF-alpha messenger RNA was detectable in most nerves and spinal cords from the FIV-infected group, but was infrequently detected in controls. Viral RNA copy numbers in plasma and sciatic nerves were detectable in all FIV-infected animals at high levels. Studies of sural nerves identified myelinated fiber atrophy in 12-week FIV-infected animals compared with age-matched control animals, which was accompanied by reduced myelin sheath thickness (P < 0.05). The footpads of FIV-infected animals displayed reduced intraepidermal fiber density compared with control animals (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: FIV infection results in the rapid onset of peripheral neuropathy, defined by axonal injury and macrophage activation, together with abundant virus within the nerve, indicating that it may serve as a model of HIV-related DSP.

Hydrothermal syntheses, crystal structures, and characteristics of a series of Cd-btx coordination polymers (btx = 1,4-Bis(triazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene).

Four novel cadmium-btx (btx = 1,4-bis(triazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene) coordination polymers [Cd(btx)(2)(NO(3))(2)](n)(1), [Cd(btx)(2)Cl(2)](n)(2), [Cd(btx)(SO(4))(H(2)O)(2)](n)(3), and [Cd(btx)(S(2)O(7))(H(2)O)](n)(4) have been prepared by hydrothermal reaction (140 or 180 degrees C) and characterized. Both 1 and 2 have two-dimensional rhombohedral grid structures, 3 possesses a two-dimensional rectangular grid structure, and 4 displays a three-dimensional framework, which is formed by btx bridging parallel layers. To the author's best knowledge, polymer 4 is the first Cd(II) polymer in which the Cd(II) ion is eight-coordinated in a hexagonal bipyrimidal geometry. In addition, we studied the effects of temperature on the hydrothermal reaction system of btx and CdSO(4) and found that different products can be obtained at different temperatures. Furthermore, polymer 3 possesses a very strong third-order NLO absorptive effect with an alpha(2) value of 1.15 x 10(-)(9) m W(-1). Polymers 2-4 display strong fluorescent emissions in the solid state at room temperature. The DTA and TGA results of the four polymers are in agreement with the crystal structures.

First octameric ellipsoid lanthanide(III) complexes: crystal structure and nonlinear optical absorptive and refractive properties.

The ligand N,N'-bis(1,3,4-thiobiazolyl)-2,6-pyridyldicarboxamide (btapca) has been synthesized and its coordination properties toward La(III) and Ce(III) in the presence of air have been investigated. The complexes [Ln8(tbzcapc)12(H2O)24].6DMF (Ln = La, 1, Ce, 2; tbzcapc = 6-[2-N-(1,3,4-thiabiazolyl)carboxamido]-2-pyridylcarboxylate) show octameric ellipsoid structures. We found the starting ligand btapca had been altered into tbzcapc during the formation process of [Ln8(tbzcapc)12(H2O)24].6DMF. The NLO properties of complexes 1 and 2 were investigated via Z-scan techniques. It is interesting that the two isostructural complexes show completely different NLO properties. Complex 1 shows NLO refractive effects without absorption, while complex 2 possesses NLO absorptive behavior without refraction.

Polyprotein cleavage mechanism of SARS CoV Mpro and chemical modification of the octapeptide.

The cleavage mechanism of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) coronavirus main proteinase (M(pro) or 3CL(pro)) for the octapeptide AVLQSGFR is studied using molecular mechanics (MM) and quantum mechanics (QM). The catalytic dyad His-41 and Cys-145 in the active pocket between domain I and II seem to polarize the pi-electron density of the peptide bond between Gln and Ser in the octapeptide, leading to an increase of positive charge on C(CO) of Gln and negative charge on N(NH) of Ser. The possibility of enhancing the chemical bond between Gln and Ser based on the "distorted key" theory [Anal. Biochem. 233 (1996) 1] is examined. The scissile peptide bond between Gln and Ser is found to be solidified through "hybrid peptide bond" by changing the carbonyl group CO of Gln to CH(2) or CF(2). This leads to a break of the pi-bond system for the peptide bond, making the octapeptide (AVLQSGFR) a "distorted key" and a potential starting system for the design of anti SARS drugs.

Kainic acid-induced excitotoxic hippocampal neurodegeneration in C57BL/6 mice: B cell and T cell subsets may contribute differently to the pathogenesis.

The roles of T cells and B cells in kainic acid (KA)-induced hippocampal lesions were studied in C57BL/6 mice lacking specific T cell populations (CD4, CD8, and CD4/CD8 cells) and B cells [Igh-6(-/-)]. At 48 mg/kg of KA administrated intranasally, KA-induced convulsions were seen in all groups. However, CD4/CD8(-/-) mice exhibited the mildest seizures; the responses of CD8(-/-), Igh-6(-/-) and wild-type mice were intermediate, whereas CD4(-/-) mice displayed much more severe clinical signs and 100% early mortality, indicating that a deficiency of CD4 T cells obviously increased susceptibility to KA-induced brain damage. Histopathological analysis of the mice that survived 7 days after KA administration revealed that CD4/CD8(-/-) mice had the fewest pathologic changes but Igh-6(-/-) mice showed more severe lesions in area CA3 of the hippocampus than CD8(-/-) and wild-type mice. Reactive astrogliosis were prominent in all KA-treated mice. Locomotor activity as assessed by open-field test increased after KA administration in Igh-6(-/-) and wild-type mice only. These results denote the influence of the adaptive immune response on KA-induced hippocampal neurodegeneration and suggest that B cell and T cell subsets may contribute differently to the pathogenesis.

Effect of high dosage of methylprednisolone on rat retinal ganglion cell apoptosis after optic nerve crush.

PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of high dose methylprednisolone (MP) on retinal ganglion cells (RGC) apoptosis. METHODS: One hundred and twenty six Wistar rats were divided into normal control, crush control and MP treatment groups. High dose MP and 0.9% sodium chloride were injected intravenously at 1 h after injury in the treatment group and crush control group, respectively. Apoptotic cells, Bcl-2 and Bax positive cells were located and calculated by terminal-deoxynucleotidyl transferase mediated dUTP-biotin nick end labeling (TUNEL), immunohistochemical method and retinal whole-mount combined with section technique at day 4, 7, 14 after crush, respectively. RESULTS: The TUNEL-labeling cells, Bcl-2 and Bax positive cells were detected in the ganglion cell layer of retina. Few apoptotic cells, a few of Bcl-2 and Bax positive cells were observed in normal control groups. The numbers of positive cells increased gradually after crush. The number of apoptotic cells and Bax positive tells in treatment groups was less than that in crush group significantly (P < 0.05), while the number of Bcl-2 positive cells in treatment group was more than that in crush group at day 4, 7 and 14 after crush significantly (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that high dose MP can inhibit the apoptosis of RGC after optic nerve crush probably through up-regulation of Bcl-2 expression and down-regulation of Bax expression.

[Clinical and molecular research in a case of familial Carney complex].

OBJECTIVE: A case of primary pigmented nodular adrenal disease (PPNAD) was first diagnosed in Ruijin Hospital, Shanghai, China and molecular genetic research was then carried on the proband and his family members. METHODS: History and laboratory tests were routinely taken. Liddle's test, adrenal CT and pituitary magnetic resonance imaging were also carried out. Complete family history was obtained and eight of the family members donated their blood for DNA extraction. Polymerase chain reaction was done on all the exons of PRKAR1A gene and the product of the reaction was sequenced with ABI 3700. The right adrenal of the patient was then resected, part of the tissue was preserved in liquid nitrogen for DNA/RNA extraction and the remaining sent to Department of Pathology. RESULTS: The patient presented an atypical appearance of Cushing's syndrome. His father had a typical history of cardiac myoma. Cortisone level could not be refrained in Liddle's test for the patient. Imaging examination presented a nodular adrenal and a full pituitary. A novel mutation of PRKAR1A-S147N was found in both the patient's and his father's gene. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first patient diagnosed as PPNAD based on his clinical manifestations, laboratory tests and imaging and pathological examinations. According to the history of his father and the results of molecular genetic analysis, the diagnosis of Carney complex can be established on this patient and his father. It is also the first time that this kind of point mutation was found in Chinese people.

Photoreactions of 3-diazo-3H-benzofuran-2-one; dimerization and hydrolysis of its primary photoproduct, a quinonoid cumulenone: a study by time-resolved optical and infrared spectroscopy.

Light-induced deazotization of 3-diazo-3H-benzofuran-2-one (1) in solution is accompanied by facile (CO)-O bond cleavage yielding 6-(oxoethenylidene)-2,4-cyclohexadien-1-one (3), which appears with a rise time of 28 ps. The expected Wolff-rearrangement product, 7-oxabicyclo[4.2.0]octa-1,3,5-trien-8-ylidenemethanone (4), is not formed. The efficient light-induced formation of the quinonoid cumulenone 3 opens the way to determine the reactivity of a cumulenone in solution. The reaction kinetics of 3 were monitored by nanosecond flash photolysis with optical (lambda(max) approximately 460 nm) as well as Raman (1526 cm(-1)) and IR detection (2050 cm(-)(1)). Remarkably, the reactivity of 3 is that expected from its valence isomer, the cyclic carbene 3H-benzofuran-2-one-3-ylidene, 2. In aqueous solution, acid-catalyzed addition of water forms the lactone 3-hydroxy-3H-benzofuran-2-one (5). The reaction is initiated by protonation of the cumulenone on its beta-carbon atom. In hexane, cumulenone 3 dimerizes to isoxindigo ((E)-[3,3']bibenzofuranylidene-2,2'-dione, 7), coumestan (6H-benzofuro[3,2-c][1]benzopyran-6-one, 8), and a small amount of dibenzonaphthyrone ([1]benzopyrano[4,3-][1]benzopyran-5,11-dione, 9) at a nearly diffusion-controlled rate. Ab initio calculations (G3) are consistent with the observed data. Carbene 2 is predicted to have a singlet ground state, which undergoes very facile, strongly exothermic (irreversible) ring opening to the cumulenone 3. The calculated barrier to formation of 4 (Wolff-rearrangement) is prohibitive. DFT calculations indicate that protonation of 3 on the beta-carbon is accompanied by cyclization to the protonated carbene 2H(+), and that dimerization of 3 to 7 and 9 takes place in a single step with negligible activation energy.

Novel Pb(II), Zn(II), and Cd(II) coordination polymers constructed from ferrocenyl-substituted carboxylate and bipyridine-based ligands.

Treatment of two kinds of ferrocenyl-substituted carboxylate ligands (3-ferrocenyl-2-crotonic acid, HOOC-CH=(CH(3))CFc (Fc=(eta(5)-C(5)H(5))Fe(eta(5)-C(5)H(4))) or O-ferrocecarbonyl benzoic acid, o-HOOCC(6)H(4)COFc with Pb(OAc)(2).3H(2)O, Zn(OAc)(2).2H(2)O, or Cd(OAc)(2).2H(2)O) resulted in four novel ferrocene-containing coordination polymers [[Pb(mu(2)-eta(2)-OOCCH=(CH(3))CFc)(2)].MeOH](n) (1), [[Zn(o-OOCC(6)H(4)COFc)(2)(4,4'-bipy)(H(2)O)(2)].2MeOH.2H(2)O](n) (4,4'-bipy = 4,4'-bipyridine) (2), [[Cd(o-OOCC(6)H(4)COFc)(2)(bpe)(MeOH)(2)].2H(2)O](n) (bpe = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethene) (3), and [Pb(o-OOCC(6)H(4)COFc)(eta(2)-o-OOCC(6)H(4)COFc)(bpe)](n)() (4). Their crystal structures have been characterized by single X-ray determinations. In polymer 1, Pb(II) ions are bridged by tridentate FcC(CH(3))=CHCOO(-) anions, forming an infinite chain [Pb(mu(2)-eta(2)-OOC=CH(CH(3))CFc)(2)](n). In polymers 2-4, there are three kinds of components, metal ions, o-FcCOC(6)H(4)COO(-) units, and organic bridging ligands. The bipyridine-based ligands connect metal ions leading to a one-dimensional chain with o-FcCOC(6)H(4)COO(-) units acting as monodentate or chelate ligands in the side chain. Such coordination polymers containing ferrocenyl-substituted carboxylate and bipyridine-based ligands are very rare. The solution-state differential pulse voltammetries of polymers 1-4 were determined. The results indicate that the half-wave potential of the ferrocenyl moieties is influenced by the Pb(II) ions in polymer 1 and strongly influenced by Zn(II), Cd(II), or Pb(II) ions in polymers 2-4. The thermal properties of the four polymers were also investigated.

Self-assembly of a series of novel metal-organic compounds containing ferrocenecarboxylate components.

Using FcCOONa (Fc = (eta(5)-C(5)H(5))Fe(eta(5)-C(5)H(4))) as starting material, we obtained an unprecedented metal-organic coordination polymer containing ferrocenecarboxylate components [[Pb(2)(FcCOO)(eta(2)-FcCOO)(mu(2)-eta(2)-FcCOO)(mu(3)-eta(2)-FcCOO)(CH(3)OH)].1.5CH(3)OH.H(2)O](n) (1), tetramer [Zn(4)(mu(2)-FcCOO)(6)(mu(4)-O)] (2), and coordination polymers [Pb(FcCOO)(mu(2)-FcCOO)(bpe)](n) (3) (bpe = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethene), [[Zn(FcCOO)(2)(bpt)].2.5H(2)O](n) (4) (bpt = N,N'-bis(3-pyridylmethyl)thiourea), and [Zn(FcCOO)(eta(2)-FcCOO)(bbp)](n) (5) (bbp = 4,4'-trimethylene-dipyridine). Compounds 1 and 2 are formed by ferrocenecarboxylate units coordinating with Pb(II) or Zn(II). In polymer 1, ferrocenecarboxylate units have four kinds of coordinate modes; just these novel coordinate modes lead to the unprecedented one-dimensional polymer where two kinds of rhomboids are arranged alternatively along the chain. Compound 2 is a tetramer, in which a distinct connectivity of the six ferrocene units is established through the four Zn atoms. Compounds 3-5 are obtained by organic ligands bridging Pb(II) or Zn(II), leading to a new type of metal-organic coordination polymer.

Novel pb and zn coordination polymers: synthesis, molecular structures, and third-order nonlinear optical properties.

Three novel coordination polymers [Pb(bbbm)(2)(NO(3))(2)](n) (bbbm = 1,1'-(1,4-butanediyl)bis-1H-benzimidazole) 1, [Zn(bbbt)(NCS)(2)](n) (bbbt = 1,1'-(1,4-butanediyl)bis-1H-benzotriazole) 2, and [Zn(pbbt)(NCS)(2)](n) (pbbt = 1,1'-(1,3-propylene)bis-1H-benzotriazole) 3 were synthesized and structurally characterized. Polymer 1 exhibits a two-dimensional rhombohedral grid network structure, the dimensions of the grid are 14.274 x 14.274 A, and the diagonal-to-diagonal distances are 24.809 x 14.125 A. Polymer 2 possesses a concavo-convex chain structure different from those of the known one-dimensional polymers, which are linear chain, zigzag chain, helical chain, double-stranded chain, and ladder chain. Polymer 3 exhibits a one-dimensional zigzag chain structure, and these chains were packed as an.ABAB. layered structure. The third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of polymers1, 2, and 3 were determined with a 7-ns pulsed laser at 532 nm. 1 shows strong third-order NLO absorptive and refractive properties, and its alpha(2) and n(2) values were calculated to be 5.8 x 10(-)(9) m W(-)(1) and 4.67 x 10(-)(18) m(2) W(-)(1) in a 3.4 x 10(-)(4) mol dm(-)(3) DMF solution, respectively. Both 2 and 3 exhibit weaker NLO absorption and strong refractive properties, and their n(2) values are 4.53 x 10(-)(18) m(2) W(-)(1) for 2 in a 5.2 x 10(-)(4) mol dm(-)(3) DMF solution and 3.02 x 10(-)(18) m(2) W(-)(1) for 3 in a 4.35 x 10(-)(4) mol dm(-)(3) DMF solution. The chi((3)) values of 1, 2, and 3 were calculated to be 1.67 x 10(-)(11), 1.62 x 10(-)(11), and 1.08 x 10(-)(11) esu, respectively, and the values are larger than those of the reported coordination polymers. We deduce that the valence shell structures of metal ions may have some influence on the strength of NLO properties, and discuss the relationships between the crystal structures of coordination polymers and the observed NLO properties.

Synthesis, crystal structures, and third-order nonlinear optical properties of a series of ferrocenyl organometallics.

Three novel ferrocenyl complexes [Zn(4-PFA)(2)(NO(3))(2)](H(2)O) (1), [Hg(2)(OAc)(4)(4-BPFA)(2)](CH(3)OH) (2), and [Cd(2)(OAc)(4)(4-BPFA)(2)] (3) (4-PFA = [(4-pyridylamino)carbonyl]ferrocene, 4-BPFA = 1,1'-bis[(4-pyridylamino)carbonyl]ferrocene) were prepared, and complexes 1 and 2 were structurally characterized by means of X-ray single-crystal diffraction. In complex 1, the zinc(II) atom is coordinated at a distorted tetrahedral environment by two nitrogen atoms from two 4-PFA moieties and two oxygen atoms from two nitrate anions; [Zn(4-PFA)(2)(NO(3))(2)] units are linked by hydrogen bonds N-H.O and O-H.O forming one-dimensional chains. Complex 2 is a tetranuclear macrocycle compound consisting of two 4-BPFA moieties and two Hg atoms; [Hg(2)(OAc)(4)(4-BPFA)(2)] units form 1-D chains by hydrogen bonds N-H.O as complex 1. Some complexes with 1,1'-bisubstituted pyridine-containing ferrocene ligands have been described, but their crystal data are limited. Compound 2 is the first example of a macrocyclic pyridine-containing ferrocenyl complex. The third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of 4-PFA, 4-BPFA, and complexes 1-3 were determined by Z-scan techniques. The results indicate that all the compounds exhibit strong self-focusing effect. The hyperpolarizability gamma values are calculated to be in the range 1.51 x 10(-)(28) to 3.12 x 10(-)(28) esu. The gamma values are nearly twice as large for complexes 1-3 as for their individual ligands, showing that the optical nonlinearity of the complexes is dominated by the ligands.

Synthesis, crystal structures, and magnetic properties of three novel ferrocenecarboxylato-bridged lanthanide dimers.

Three novel ferrocenecarboxylato-bridged lanthanide dimers [Gd2(mu 2-OOCFc)2(OOCFc)4(MeOH)2(H2O)2].2MeOH.2H2O (1) (Fc = (eta 5-C5H5)Fe(eta 5-C5H4)), [Nd2(mu 2-OOCFc)2(OOCFc)4(H2O)4].2MeOH.H2O (2), and [Y2(mu 2-OOCFc)2-(OOCFc)4(H2O)4].2MeOH (3) have been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. In each complex, two Ln(III) (Ln = Gd, Nd, or Y) ions are bridged by two ferrocenecarboxylate anions as asymmetrically bridging ligands, leading to dimeric cores, [Ln2(mu 2-OOCFc)2]; each Ln(III) ion has an irregular polyhedral coordination environment with nine coordinated oxygen atoms derived from the ferrocenecarboxylate ligands and coordinated solvent molecules. In the solid-state structure of compound 1, [Gd2(mu 2-OOCFc)2(OOCFc)4(MeOH)2(H2O)2] groups are joined together by hydrogen bonds forming a two-dimensional network. Both compounds 2 and 3 show one-dimensional chain structures by hydrogen bonding; they are different from 1. Magnetic measurements show unexpected ferromagnetic coupling between the gadolinium(III) ions; the best fittings to the experimental magnetic susceptibilities gave J = 0.006 cm-1 and g = 2.0 for 1. The magnetic behavior for 2 was also studied in the temperature range of 1.8-300 K.

[Combined detection of K-ras mutation and CA 19-9 level in plasma of patients with pancreatic cancer].

OBJECTIVE: To confirm the effect of combined detection of K-ras gene mutation and CA 19-9 level in plasma in the diagnosis of pancreatic carcinoma. METHODS: In 33 patients without pancreatic carcinoma and 15 patients with pancreatic carcinoma, the value of K-ras mutation and CA 19-9 level were examined by enriched polymerase chain reaction (PCR) restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) and radioimmunoassay respectively. The data were analysed with chi(2) test, Fisher's exact test and Kruekal-wall's test. All patients were confirmed pathologically. RESULTS: Eleven of the 15 patients with pancreatic carcinoma and 2 of 10 patients with chronic pancreatitis were found K-ras mutation. CA 19-9 level in patients with pancreatic cancer was significantly higher than that in those with benign disease but with a low specificity. The sensitivity, specificity of combined detection of K-ras gene mutation and CA 19-9 level in the plasma of patients with pancreatic cancer were 66.67% and 97%. There was a significant difference between patients with pancreatic cancer and those without pancreatic cancer. Pathological examination showed atypical hyperplasia in one patient with chronic pancreatitis who had K-ras mutation and higher CA 19-9 level. CONCLUSIONS: Combined detection of K-ras gene mutation and CA 19-9 can be used for adjuvant diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. It is more specific than detection of single K-ras gene mutation or CA 19-9 level in the plasma. The method is complementary to single detection of K-ras gene mutation or CA 19-9 level because it decreases the rate of false-positive diagnosis.

[Assessment of preoperative localization techniques for patients with primary hyperparathyroidism].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the sensitivity and usefulness of 99mTc-sestamibi scintigraphy (SS) and neck ultrasonography (US) as preoperative localization procedures in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT). METHODS: 160 patients with proved pHPT in Peking Union Medical College Hospital from June 1983 to June 2002 were studied. There were 107 women(66.9%) and 53 men (33.1%), with a mean age of 38.9 years (10-73 years). 100 patients were underwent SS and 148 patients were underwent US prior to surgery, and the results were compared with operative and histological findings. RESULTS: The sensitivity of SS and US in localization of the enlarged parathyroid glands was 94.0% and 85.1% respectively, and the positive predictive value of SS and US was 100% and 89.1% respectively, the overall sensitivity was 98.9% by combination of SS and US. In solitary parathyroid adenomas group (n = 145), the sensitivity of SS and US was 93.3% and 84.7% respectively; There was no significant difference (P = 0.428) in sensitivity of SS between the parathyroid glands correctly identified and undetected in classical neck location as compared with ectopic parathyroid glands, whereas significantly (P = 0.026) influenced by the US sensitivity. CONCLUSIONS: Different sensitivity exit between SS and VS in preoperative localization in patients with pHPT undergoing parathyroidectomy. The combined use of SS and US could increase the sensitivity of localization technique. Ectopic parathyroid had no influence on the sensitivity of 99mTc-MIBI scanning, but decreased the sensitivity of ultrasonography. The size of parathyroid tumors had effects on the sensitivity of ultrasonography. Otherwise, various conditions causing SS false negative were observed. Some interfere factors should be excluded when SS negative results were encountered in clinical practice.

[Combining diagnosis of IOFB and complications with multiple image-related methods].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the roles of diagnosing intraocular foreign body (IOFB) and their complications with CT, B-scan, X-ray film, MRI and UBM. METHODS: Retrospective study of 103 clinic inpatient cases. RESULTS: CT showing rate was 100% (103/103), CT scan could identify positions of high density IOFB, and define metal or non-metal. But for the size and shape of metal IOFB, the low density IOFB and complications of IOFB, the showing rate was lower. The total showing rate of B-scan for IOFB was 93.2%, but the discovering rates were only 68.7% and 66.7% for anterior segment and retrobulbar IOFB, but the showing rate was high to the vitreous opacity and retinal detachment caused by IOFB. X-ray film can clearly show the size and shape of the metal IOFB. MRI can show the low density IOFB and orbital FB. UBM has a good image for the low density and small IOFB at the anterior segment of globe. CONCLUSION: In the diagnosis and localization of IOFB, CT can well identify the IOFBs and show their relation with globe wall. B-scan can show even more clearly the relation between IOFB and globe wall, and complications of IOFB. X-ray film can distinctly reveal the size and shape of metal IOFB. MRI is good at showing low density, non-magnetic IOFB. UBM is only used in small or low density IOFB at the anterior segment of globe. The combination of multiple image-related methods can provide the required information on diagnosis and surgery design of IOFB.
