Changes of hippocampus somatostatin and learning ability in rats after +Gz exposure.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate changes of learning ability and somatostatin (SS) changes after positive acceleration (+Gz) exposures. METHOD: Eighty male SD rats were randomly divided into 3 groups: control group (Con), +6 Gz/3 min group (+6 Gz), and +10 Gz/3 min group (+10 Gz), 8 rats in each group. Changes of learning ability in rats were observed at 0 d, 2 d, 4 d and 6 d after +Gz exposure. SS in hippocampus was measured by RIA at 0 d, 2 d and 4 d after +Gz exposures (there were 8 rats every time, in each group). RESULT: In Y-maze test, number of correct response decreased significantly (P<0.01), and total reaction time increased significantly (P<0.01) in +6 Gz and +10 Gz groups as compared with control group; number of correct response and total reaction time in +10 Gz group changed significantly at 0 d (P<0.01 or P<0.05) as compared with +6 Gz group. RIA showed that, content of SS in hippocampus declined at 0 d and 2 d (P<0.05 or P<0.01) in +6 Gz and +10 Gz groups as compared with control group. CONCLUSION: +Gz exposure could impair learning ability of rats, and inhibit expression of SS in hippocampus.

[Effects of simulated weightlessness on ALP, ACP, collagen I, and biomechanics of hind-limb bones in rats].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate effects of 3 weeks simulated weightlessness on biomechanical parameters, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), acid phosphatase (ACP) and collagen I of hind-limb bones in tail-suspended rats. METHOD: Fourteen male SD rats were divided equally into control group (CON) and experimental group; tail-suspended (TS) was used to simulate weightlessness. After 3 weeks tail-suspension, biomechanical parameters of femur were measured; ALP, ACP and collagen I of tibia were observed. RESULT: Elastic load, maximum load, and bending rigidity coefficient decreased significantly (P<0.01), while the maximum deformation and bending toughness coefficient increased markedly (P<0.01 or P<0.05). Morphological results showed that ALP declines significantly in TS group, ACP and type I collagen increased significantly in TS group. CONCLUSION: After tail-suspension for 3 weeks, growth of rat's weight bearing bones are suppressed, biomechanical capability declines, and collagen I metabolism becomes disordered.

Effects of denitrogenation on bubble formation during decompression in rabbits.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the effect of different degrees of denitrogenation on decompression sickness. METHOD: Twenty-four rabbits were randomly divided into control group, 100% oxygen inhalation 30 min group, 60 min group and 120 min group. The rabbits were anesthetized and ventilated by mechanical ventilator. After 0, 30, 60, and 120 min of denitrogenation by inhalation of 100% oxygen, the rabbits were exposed to 11000 m for 30 min. The gas bubbles generated in the body of rabbits were detected and monitored by a Doppler ultrasound detector over the precordium. RESULT: Time to bubble appearance increased with time of 100% oxygen inhalation during altitude decompression. As compared with the control group, time to bubble appearance lengthened significantly in 100% oxygen inhalation 60 min and 120 min groups (P<0.01). Time to bubble appearance was positively correlated with time of 100% oxygen inhalation (P<0.01). Accumulative number of bubbles decreased with the time of 100% oxygen inhalation. As compared with the control group, accumulative number of bubbles decreased significantly in 100% oxygen inhalation of 60 min and 120 min groups (P<0.01). Accumulative number of bubbles was negatively correlated with time of 100% oxygen inhalation (P<0.01). CONCLUSION: Denitrogenation by inhalation of 100% oxygen for 60 min and 120 min may reduce the generation of gas bubbles in rabbits when decompressed to an altitude of 11000 m.

[Development and application of self-powered short arm human centrifuge].

OBJECTIVE: To present the development and application of a self-powered short arm human centrifuge. METHOD: Self-powered short arm human centrifuge consisted of human power, adjustable resistance trig, short arm and supporting construction parts. It was driven by human power. The short arm turned around the supporting part so artificial gravity is produced. The physical load can be adjusted by the adjustable resistance part. G-level depends on the rotative velocity of the central shaft. Nine healthy male volunteers received self-powered short arm human centrifuge training for 5 min per day with rotative velocity of 30-34 r min-1 for 7 d. Cardiac pumping function was measured before and after training. RESULT: Heart rate (HR) decreased significantly while left ventricular ejection time (LVET) increased significantly after 3 d training, and HR and LVET changed further after 7 d training. Stroke volume increased significantly only after 7 d training. CONCLUSION: Self-powered short arm human centrifuge combines artificial gravity and exercise and included other advantages of safety and economy of construction. Cardiac pumping function could be improved by 7 d training. It may be used for anti-G physiological training or as a countermeasure to counteract the effect of microgravity.

[Immunophenotyping of 106 adult patients with acute leukemia by flow cytometry].

OBJECTIVE: To study the immunophenotyping of adult patients with acute leukemia and its association with the prognosis. METHODS: Immunophenotyping was performed in 106 adult patients with acute leukemia by three-color flow cytometry analysis using CD34/SSC gating. RESULTS: The antigens expressed in 71 patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) were mainly CD13, CD33, HLA-DR, CD34 and CD117. Lymphoid antigen expression was identified in 23.9% adult AML patients and CD56 antigen expression in 15.5% of the AML patients. In 29 patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), the expressed antigens were mainly HLA-DR, CD10, CD19, CD34 and CD7, and 34.5% of these patients were found to be positive for myeloid antigen expression. Complete remission (CR) rate in AML patients with lymphoid antigen expression after chemotherapy was lower than that in AML patients without lymphoid antigen expression (52.9% vs 77.8%, P<0.05), and no significant impact was noted of myeloid antigen expression in ALL on the CR of the patients (70.0% vs 94.7%, P>0.05). The CR rate in AML with CD56 antigen expression was lower than that in AML without CD56 expression (36.4% vs 78.3%, P<0.025), and the CR rate in CD34+ AML was lower than that in CD34- AML (56.0% vs 80.4%, P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Gating of CD45/SSC can eliminate the interference of normal cells to render more reliable immunophenotyping results. The expressions of CD56+, CD34+, lymphoid antigen in adult AML patients, who have lower CR rate, often signify poor prognosis.

[Changes of bone morphogenesis proteins and transforming growth factor-beta in hind-limb bones of 21 d tail-suspended rats].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate changes of bone morphogenesis proteins (BMP), transforming growth [correction of grouth] factors-beta (TGF-beta) in tibia and the growing of femur in tail-suspended rats after 21 d simulated weightlessness. METHOD: Fourteen male SD rats were randomly divided into control group (CON) and tall-suspension group (TS). After 21 d tail-suspension, basic physical parameters of the femur were measured; changes of BMP, TGF-beta in tibia were assayed by immunohistochemical method. RESULT: During 21 d tail-suspension, all rats grew well without apparent stress reaction. After 21 d weightlessness simulation, wet weight, dried weight, ash, diameter and density of femur in TS group declined significantly (P<0.01). Immunohistochemical results of tibia showed that both BMP and TGF-beta declined in tissues from all regions of the tibia. CONCLUSION: After 21 d tall-suspension, the growth of rat's weight bearing bones were suppressed, production and secretion of BMP and TGF-beta was holdback.

[Upright tilt table testing and syncope evaluation].

Syncope is a state of unconsciousness, the process of syncope is sudden and transient. Transient and widespread cerebral ischemia/hypoxia are the reasons of syncope. Sixty percent to seventy percent of the patients suffering from syncope have no categorical reasoning, although lots of assisted examinations had been carried out. Those syncope are called unexplained syncope or unknown origin syncope. Basic upright tilt table test, as well as isoproterenol tilt table test, is a quite effective diagnostic technique for unexplained syncope. This paper reviewed the value of upright tilt [correction of tile] table test in diagnosing unexplained syncope. The method of experiment, information of it's clinical application and points for attention with test were also introduced.
