Female brown trout were sacrificed every month or twice a month during the reproductive season. Plasma gonadotropin (GtH) and estradiol-17 beta (E2-17 beta) were measured using radioimmunological techniques, in relation with the state of gametogenesis. From ovulation to July egg's diameters remained less than 1 mm, and ovogenesis was characterized from the histological appearance of three types of vitellus: glycoproteique (type I), lipidique (type II), lipidoprotéique (type III), and the immunological plasma detection of the vitellogenin. During this period GtH levels remained lower than 1 ng/ml except in March, when they increased around 5 ng/ml, both with pituitary GtH and plasma E2 17 beta. This rise occurred just before the appearance of the type III vitellus within the oocyte, and might correspond to a critical phase of the reproductive cycle during which vitellogenin could not be detected in 70% of the animals. During rapid growth of the oocyte from 1 to 5 mm, mean GtH levels increased from 0.75 to 2.5 ng/ml when those of the E2-17 beta increased more rapidly but began to drop before the end of vitellogenesis. Maturation and ovulation were accompanied by a rise of the GtH level, in correlation with the lower levels of E2-17 beta measured during the cycle, GtH remained high even after ovulation, and more in fish which had kept their eggs within the body cavity. Correlation among GtH, E2-17 beta, and the diameters of eggs had been calculated. There was a positive correlation among GtH, E2-17 beta levels, and the diameters of eggs during exogenous vitellogenesis, and a negative between GtH and E2-17 beta at the end of the reproductive cycle. These results were discussed, in relation to the existence of a pulsatile mode of GtH secretion.
In the course of a 5-year follow-up of 16 patients who underwent plastic reconstruction of the larynx by a nasoseptal graft after extended frontal and frontolateral laryngectomies, one of them developed local recurrence of squamous cell carcinoma and was totally laryngectomized. Histological studies were made of the grafted cartilage and its mucosal lining. The microscopic findings are reported.

We have used autogenous nasal mucoseptal (NMS) graft for the reconstruction of the larynx after partial laryngectomy in glottic carcinoma invading the anterior commissure, for the past three years. The composite graft, readily available and obtained without sequela, provides satisfactory and large enough replacement tissue. It provides both a dependable rigid cartilaginous wall and a respiratory mucous lining of the lumen. The method was found to be simple and effective in bridging the laryngeal defect. The free NMS graft was used for reconstruction after extended frontal and frontolateral laryngectomy in 10 patients. The patients were successfully decannulated within 4 to 6 days after the operation and in none of the cases was nasogastric feeding tube or laryngeal stenting necessary. In eight patients anatomical and functional results were achieved; the neolarynx prevented a permanent tracheostomy and a fair voice was obtained.
The use of a dorsal aorta catheterization technique to study gonadotropin secretion patterns in the rainbow trout was tested. Heparin used to flush the cannula between repetitive samplings did not have any effect on plasma GTH levels. Catheterization resulted in a slight short-term change in those levels. The gonadotropin levels returned to their initial values as soon as 30 min to 6 hrs after the operation. From then on, the GTH levels remained close to the initial values in fish exhibiting normal feeding behaviour, whereas they tended to decrease in "stressed" females which did not eat normally. The fish which adapted well to dorsal aortic catheterization did not show any changes in the diurnal pattern of GTH levels or in normal gonadal function and GTH profiles during the processes of oocyte maturation and ovulation. It is concluded that individual catheterized trout can be used advantageously for studying gonadotropin secretion patterns after a 3-day recovery period and the elimination of those fish which neither resume normal feeding nor return to initial, pre-operative GTH levels. Using this technique, it was demonstrated that hypophysial GTH release in trout with oocytes undergoing active vitellogenesis is probably effected by short-term bursts (pulses) of secretion.
Plasma glucocorticoid levels, leucocrit, hematocrit and resumption of feeding were recorded in catheterized rainbow trout for 5 days after cannulation of the dorsal aorta. In some animals, glucocorticoids returned to basal levels, while a regular and active feeding behaviour was resumed shortly after cannulation. In contrast, other individuals demonstrated relatively high and irregular glucocorticoid concentrations and constantly refused food. The leucocrit was significantly depressed from 30 min until 24 h after cannulation; after day 1, this parameter exhibited a recovery profile in all animals, independently of the glucocorticoid levels. During the 5-day experimental period, seven blood samples were taken, amounting to 10 p. 100 of the total blood volume. In some individuals, the hematocrit continuously declined, suggesting low compensation for the erythrocyte loss. The results of this investigation indicate that well-adapted catheterized trout may be obtained a few days after the operation. Feeding activity should be checked carefully and particular caution used when determining the volume and frequency of the blood samples.
A Patient is reported in whom radiographs disclosed changes in the skull and long bones that were characteristic of craniometaphyseal dysplasia. Because of the deformity of the jaws (maximillary retrognathism), a horizontal osteotomy (Le Fort I procedure) was performed.

A case of malignant oncocytoma of the parotid gland in a 32-year-old male is presented. Ten months after parotidectomy an undifferentiated carcinoma, in which oncocytes still could be recognized, developed in the operated area. According to the literature available to us, this is the second reported case in which malignant transformation in a benign oncocytoma of the salivary gland has been observed.

Zenker's diverticulum is an outpouching of the hypopharyngeal wall through a triangular area of weakness in the inferior pharyngeal constrictor muscle. The current treatment of choice is a one-stage diverticulectomy, with or without a cricopharyngeal myotomy. Closure of the esophagus after diverticulectomy by conventional suturing techniques may be somewhat difficult and time consuming. In the past 2 decades, use of stapling devices has been suggested in four reports, the largest being a series of four patients. We have used the Proximate disposable linear stapler in seven cases of Zenker's diverticulectomy with excellent results. Operation time was shortened, patient recovery hastened, and no complications were seen. We recommend the use of the stapling device in excision of Zenker's diverticulum.
Plasma cell granuloma is a tumor-like lesion consisting of mature plasma cells, sometimes with Russell bodies and reticuloendothelial cells, supported by a stroma of granulation tissue. These tumors are most common in the lungs and were sporadically reported in extrapulmonary sites. A rare case of plasma cell granuloma of the thyroid is reported. The value of immunohistochemical staining is demonstrated.
